Chapter 5 - The Wedding Day

Saturday arrived with a crisp, clear autumn sky.
The wedding was hosted at a historic country club in Lake Forest, an ultra-exclusive venue that Marcus had booked using a forged corporate guarantee from my agency. Over two hundred guests attended—high-society figures, prominent business owners, politicians, and my entire forty-six-person staff from Danielle Media.
I stood in the bridal suite upstairs, wearing a magnificent, custom-tailored lace wedding gown that cost thirty thousand dollars—paid for entirely out of my company’s legal defense fund.
Sophia, my chief operating officer and closest friend, was helping me fix my veil.
“Are you nervous?” Sophia whispered, her hands trembling slightly as she adjusted the lace.
“Not even a little bit,” I replied calmly, looking at my reflection in the full-length mirror. “Is Clara safe?”
“Arthur Mercer picked her up from the Highland Park estate two hours ago while Evelyn and Marcus were at the venue,” Sophia confirmed. “She’s currently at a private medical facility in Evanston getting a full forensic examination and treatment for her injuries. She’s safe, Danielle.”
A wave of profound relief washed over me. The most vulnerable piece of the puzzle was out of harm's way.
At 3:00 PM, the grand doors of the chapel opened.
I walked down the aisle on the arm of my father figure and lead counsel, Arthur Mercer. At the end of the aisle stood Marcus Vance, looking like a prince in his black tuxedo, flanked by his father Arthur senior as his best man. Evelyn sat in the front row, wearing an emerald dress, smiling like a queen who had just conquered a kingdom.
Marcus took my hand at the altar, his palm slightly sweaty.
“You look beautiful, my love,” he whispered under his breath.
“Thank you, Marcus,” I smiled warmly, my eight-tooth corporate smile locked in place. “You have no idea what today means to me.”
The minister began the service. He spoke of love, devotion, trust, and lifelong partnership. Marcus recited his vows with eloquent, dramatic perfection—promising to protect me, honor me, and cherish me forever.
When it was my turn, I looked directly into his eyes.
“Marcus,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the quiet chapel. “I promise to give you exactly what you deserve. I promise that from this day forward, every truth will come to light, and every debt will be paid in full.”
Marcus blinked, a brief flicker of confusion passing over his face before he smiled and slipped the diamond ring onto my finger.
“By the power vested in me,” the minister announced, “I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
Marcus leaned in and kissed me. The chapel erupted into enthusiastic applause.

I smiled broadly, taking his arm as we walked down the aisle together as "Mr. and Mrs. Vance."
Enjoy your final ten minutes of freedom, Marcus, I thought.
