Chapter 1 - The Lockdown at the Gates

The heavy iron gates at the perimeter of the Vance Estate slid shut with a deep, hydraulic thud that echoed across the manicured ten-acre grounds. High above the brick boundary walls, security floodlights flickered to life, bathing the paved circular driveway in a harsh, cold white glow.

Inside the grand ballroom, the music was booming. Forty relatives, distant cousins, self-proclaimed socialite friends, and parasitic hangers-on were sipping champagne from my personal cellar, eating caviar off gold-rimmed china, and laughing over jokes about how "generous" Julian Vance was to fund their lavish lifestyles.

I stood at the top of the sweeping marble staircase overlooking the foyer, wearing my rumpled, water-stained bespoke suit. The grease from the kitchen sink had smeared onto my lapel where I had held Clara, but I didn't care. To me, that stain was a mark of honor—a physical reminder of the woman who had helped me build everything while eating instant noodles in a studio apartment ten years ago.

"Julian?"

A sharp, shrill voice cut through the background music. My mother, Evelyn Vance, stepped out into the foyer holding a crystal flute of hundred-year-old cognac. She was dripping in diamonds—diamonds that had been purchased using the corporate card I had issued for "emergency household maintenance."

Behind her walked my brother, Tristan, looking smug in a designer tuxedo, accompanied by three high-society investors I had explicitly barred from my corporate headquarters months ago.

"Julian! Darling, you're back early!" Evelyn gasped, a fleeting shadow of panic crossing her face before she quickly plastered on her signature aristocratic smile. "We were told your flight from Tokyo wasn't landing until tomorrow night! Oh, look at you... you look terrible! Did you get caught in the rain? And why are the perimeter lights on? The security guards at the front gate won't let Don Emilio’s driver leave!"

I didn't answer her immediately. I slowly descended the marble steps, one by one. The heavy, rhythmic click of my leather shoes against the polished stone silenced the chatter in the foyer.

Sienna—my younger sister who had tried to block my path in the kitchen moments ago—hurried out of the service hallway, her face pale, sweating profusely through her silk gown. She rushed to our mother’s side and frantically whispered into her ear.

Evelyn’s smile faltered. Her eyes widened, darting toward the rear corridor, then back to me.

"Julian..." Evelyn’s voice dropped into a strained, fluttering laugh. "Sienna says... she says you met Clara in the back pantry. Now, darling, don't be dramatic. You know how Clara gets. She’s been so terribly depressed lately! We tried to hire professional staff, but she insisted on doing the heavy chores. She said it made her feel... useful! We were only respecting her wishes!"

I stopped five feet in front of my mother.

The silence in the grand foyer was absolute. Guests were beginning to spill out of the ballroom, sensing the icy, suffocating atmosphere radiating from the center of the room.

"Respecting her wishes?" I asked. My voice was dangerously quiet, smooth as silk, and cold as grave dirt.

"Yes!" Tristan chimed in, taking a step forward and adjusting his gold cufflinks. "Julian, bro, don't start a scene in front of the investors. Don Emilio is about to sign the venture distribution agreement! Clara has been acting unstable for months. She doesn't belong in social settings anymore. Mom was just trying to protect the Vance family name while you were handling the Asia merger."

I turned my head slowly to look at my brother. Tristan had failed out of three universities, crashed four sports cars I had paid for, and had spent his entire adult life living off the monthly allowance I generated.

"The Vance family name?" I whispered. "Tristan, who paid for your tuxedo?"

Tristan blinked, taken aback. "What? Well... the family trust—"

"Who built the family trust?" I stepped into his personal space.

Tristan swallowed hard, taking a half-step back. "You did, Julian, but—"

"And who stood beside me in a freezing warehouse at three in the morning when the bank was four hours away from foreclosing on my first patent?" I looked from Tristan to my mother, then to Sienna. "Was it you, Mom? Was it you, Sienna? Was it any of the forty leeching parasites drinking my cognac in that ballroom right now?"

Evelyn’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of red. "Julian! How dare you speak to your mother like that in front of our guests! Clara is a common girl from a working-class background! She was never equipped to manage an estate like this! We did you a favor by stepping in!"

"Marcus," I spoke into the earpiece.

"Yes, Mr. Vance," my head of security replied instantly.

"Bring the tactical team into the main foyer. Disarm the estate security staff who accepted bribes from my mother, and escort every uninvited guest off the premises immediately."

"Julian!" Evelyn shrieked as the grand double front doors burst open.

A dozen heavily armed, black-uniformed corporate security officers marched into the foyer, lead by Marcus. Guests began screaming in panic as security officers moved through the ballroom, confiscating glasses, escorting high-society elites toward the gates on foot, and barring the garage doors so no one could leave in the luxury vehicles registered to Vance Global.

Tristan tried to grab my arm. "Julian, you can't do this! Don Emilio is a major stakeholder!"

I grabbed Tristan by the collar of his designer tuxedo, twisting the fabric until his breathing choked off, and dragged his face within inches of mine.

"Don Emilio is a criminal fraud who is currently under federal investigation," I whispered into his ear. "And as of sixty seconds ago, Tristan, your allowance is zero. Your credit cards are canceled. Your cars are impounded. You have thirty minutes to get out of my house, or I will have Marcus arrest you for felony trespassing."

I shoved him back into our mother’s arms. Evelyn gasped, holding her sobbing son, staring at me as if I were a stranger.

"You're a monster, Julian!" Evelyn spat, tears of pure rage ruining her heavy makeup. "You're throwing your own blood out onto the street for a maid?!"

"Clara is my wife," I said, turning my back on them as Marcus’s men began clearing the foyer. "And you are no longer my family."
