Chapter 6 - The Corporate Purge

By 10:00 AM, the war moved from my residential estate to the central headquarters of Vance Global Logistics—a sixty-story glass tower sitting in the financial district of the city.
The executive boardroom on the top floor was packed with twenty senior vice presidents, board members, and legal representatives. The atmosphere was charged with extreme anxiety; news of Don Emilio’s federal arrest had already hit the financial wires, and stock in Vance Global was experiencing wild pre-market volatility.
I sat at the head of the twenty-foot mahogany conference table. Beside me sat Sarah Vance and David Vance, my chief legal counsel.
"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice calm, commanding, and echoing off the glass walls overlooking the city skyline. "I am sure you have all seen the morning news regarding Don Emilio and the offshore transaction rumors."
A senior board member—a long-time ally of my mother named Arthur Sterling (no relation to the doctor)—stood up, slamming his hands onto the table.
"Julian! This is a catastrophe!" Sterling shouted. "The board was told by your brother Tristan last week that Vance Global was entering a joint venture with Emilio’s firm! We approved preliminary capital allocations!"
"You approved those allocations, Arthur," I said, leaning back in my chair, "because my brother paid you a two-hundred-thousand-dollar 'consulting fee' into your private account in Zurich."
Sterling froze, his mouth hanging open, his face going completely white.
Sarah Vance opened her briefcase, pulling out a stack of financial ledger printouts, and slid them across the table to every board member present.
"These are the certified bank audit trails from Zurich, gentlemen," Sarah announced clearly. "Arthur Sterling, along with three other senior vice presidents sitting in this room today, accepted illegal kickbacks from Tristan Vance and Don Emilio to facilitate the unauthorized liquidation of Vance Global real estate assets."
Panic erupted across the boardroom. Two vice presidents jumped to their feet, shouting excuses, while others stared at the ledger sheets in utter horror.
"I am the majority shareholder of this corporation," I declared, my voice cutting through the panic like an iron blade. "Under Section 8 of our corporate charter, any officer involved in gross fiduciary fraud or racketeering is subject to immediate termination without severance, pending criminal prosecution."
I looked at Arthur Sterling and the three vice presidents.
"Four uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Unit are waiting in the lobby downstairs," I said smoothly. "You have two choices. You can sign your voluntary resignations and surrender all corporate stock options right now, or you can walk out of this building in handcuffs in front of the press cameras currently waiting on the sidewalk."
Arthur Sterling’s hands trembled so violently he could barely hold his pen. One by one, the four corrupt executives pulled out their pens and signed the emergency resignation documents.
"Get out of my building," I commanded softly.
As the disgraced executives hurried out of the boardroom with their heads bowed, I looked around the table at the remaining board members—men and women who had stood by me during the early years of the company.
"Vance Global is not for sale," I announced to the room. "And as of today, ten percent of all corporate voting shares have been permanently reassigned to the Clara Vance Foundation for Domestic Abuse and Victim Recovery."
The remaining board members stood up, breaking into unanimous, respectful applause.

I stood up, adjusting my tie, a deep sense of satisfaction filling my chest. The corporate leeches had been purged. The traitors were facing prison.
Now, it was time to rebuild the woman who had given me everything.
