Chapter 14 - The Paper Trail

The next forty-eight hours turned into a relentless legal siege. Alejandro Vargas filed petition after petition, attempting to cut off the utility lines to the mansion, claiming the "unlawful occupants" were draining the assets of the estate.
Javier countersued immediately, utilizing his extensive financial resources to tie up the eviction order in a web of civil appeals. But everyone knew it was a temporary fix. The reversionary clause in the original deed was legally sound, written by brilliant corporate lawyers years before Carlos had even met Mariana.
Mariana spent her nights in the library, surrounded by stacks of old boxes containing her late husband's personal journals, business receipts, and correspondence. She refused to sleep. She knew that somewhere in the past lay the key to defeating Elvira’s ghost.
At 3:00 a.m. on a rainy Thursday, Mariana’s fingers brushed against a false bottom in a leather briefcase Carlos used to take on his business trips to Guadalajara. She pulled out a small, faded pocket notebook.
As she flipped through the pages, her heart skipped a beat. The entries were written in Carlos's hurried, panicked handwriting during the final months of his life, when his health was failing and his mother's control over his company had reached a suffocating peak.
“July 14th,” one entry read. “Mother found out about the trust I set up for Mariana and the baby. She threatened to liquidate the shipping firm if I didn't sign the Coyoacán reversion deed. I had no choice. I signed her papers. But she doesn't know that the capital used to buy the house didn't come from her corporation. It came from my father's hidden insurance policy—money she hid from the tax authorities in 2018. If she uses that deed against Mariana, the tax fraud will destroy her entire empire.”

Mariana stared at the page, a sudden, powerful wave of clarity washing over her. Elvira hadn't used her own money to buy the mansion; she had used undeclared, illegal funds from an international insurance payout.
"Javier! Natalia!" Mariana screamed, running out into the hallway, the notebook clutched tightly against her chest. "I found it. I found the weapon."
