Chapter 15 - The Counter-Trap

With the notebook in hand, Natalia Torres worked through the night to draft a federal whistle-blower petition to the Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT). If they could prove that the foundation of Elvira’s property trust was built on international tax evasion, the entire reversionary clause would be invalidated under federal anti-money laundering statutes.
But Alejandro Vargas was a desperate man. He knew Elvira was hours away from death, and once she passed, his access to her foreign bank accounts would be frozen by her creditors. He needed to execute the eviction immediately to secure the property for his own shell company.
The next morning, while Javier was at a meeting with federal prosecutors, three heavy tow trucks and a private security van pulled up to the gates of the mansion.
Vargas stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a stamped document from a corrupt local magistrate. "Open the gates! We have an emergency enforcement order for the immediate clearing of the property!"
Javier's security team stood their ground at the fence, their hands resting near their holsters. "Sir, this order is currently under a federal stay of execution. You cannot enter."
"The stay was lifted an hour ago by Judge Romero," Vargas sneered, waving the paper in front of the security cameras. "If you do not open these gates, my men will cut the chains, and you will all be arrested for obstructing justice."
Inside the house, Mariana stood in the foyer, holding Mateo tightly against her side. Toby stood in front of them, his hackles raised, a low, defensive growl vibrating in his throat.
"Mamá, is the bad lady coming back?" Mateo whispered, his body trembling as he heard the shouting at the gate.
Mariana looked down at her son, her face hardening into an expression of absolute resolve. She remembered the dog cage, the insults, the years of feeling helpless. She was not that girl anymore.

"No, Mateo," Mariana said, her voice dropping to a calm, deadly level. "The bad lady is gone. And I am going to finish this right now."
She walked to the security console, pressed the button to open the grand gates, and stepped out onto the porch to face the wolves alone.
