Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the Cold

The cold air rushed into the cottage, mixing with the scent of old paper and damp wood. I stood my ground, my body shielding the open filing cabinet.
"You're a monster," I whispered, my voice dripping with pure rage. "You locked an eight-year-old girl in a freezing room for twelve hours. That is child abuse. It's torture."
Evelyn took a step forward, the iron poker dragging lightly against the concrete floor. The scraping sound set my teeth on edge. "It is discipline, David. Something you and your soft, modern ideas know nothing about. Laura was raised this way, and she became a resilient, obedient woman. Sophie has your weak blood. She needs to be broken before she can be built back up."
"She is my daughter," I snarled, stepping toward her. "And you will never lay a hand on her again. I have the ledgers, Evelyn. I have your sick little journal. You are going to prison."
Evelyn let out a soft, dry laugh. It was a terrifying sound. "Prison? For disciplining my granddaughter on my own property? With a mother who consented to it? You underestimate my influence in this town, David. The police chief is a personal friend. The judge is my cousin. You are a soldier who has been away too long. You are unstable. Suffering from PTSD, perhaps?"
She gestured to the folder on the floor. "Who do you think they will believe? A decorated pillar of the community, or a traumatized veteran who broke into my property with a crowbar?"
"Let's find out," I said.
I reached down to grab the ledgers and the USB drives, stuffing them into my jacket. Evelyn lunged. For an older woman, she moved with surprising, vicious speed. She swung the iron poker aimed directly at my temple.
My military training kicked in. I ducked beneath the swing, the iron whistling past my ear. I grabbed her wrist, twisting it just enough to force her to drop the weapon. It clattered to the floor. She gasped, her face twisting in fury.
"You dare touch me in my own home?" she hissed.
"I'm leaving," I said, backing toward the door. "And I'm taking my daughter. If you or Laura come near her again, I will use every resource I have to destroy you."
I ran out into the freezing night, sprinting toward my car. Sophie was huddled in the passenger seat, wrapped in my military jacket, her eyes wide with terror. As I jumped into the driver's seat and locked the doors, I looked back at the cottage.
Evelyn was standing in the doorway, her phone already pressed to her ear. She wasn't chasing me. She was calling in her reinforcements.
May you like
I threw the car into reverse and sped down the icy driveway, the tires screaming. My phone began to buzz in my pocket.
It was Laura.
