Chapter 4 - A Mother's Betrayal

I unlocked the door, but only opened it a crack, my body blocking the entrance. "How did you find us?" I demanded, my voice a harsh whisper.
Laura’s eyes were red and swollen. She looked exhausted, completely broken. "Your car has a GPS tracker, David. My mother had it installed before you went on deployment. She... she wanted to keep tabs on you."
I felt a cold dread wash over me. "Get inside," I hissed, pulling her into the room and locking the door behind her. I pointed a finger at her. "Keep your voice down. Sophie is sleeping."
Laura looked toward the bed, a sob escaping her throat. She took a step toward her daughter, but I stepped in front of her, my face hardened.
"Don't go near her," I said. "I saw the videos, Laura. I saw you lock her in that room. I saw the agreement. You signed away her custody. You took out a life insurance policy on me. What the hell is going on?"
Laura collapsed onto her knees, burying her face in her hands. She wept openly, her body shaking with violent sobs. "I had no choice, David! You don't know what she is capable of!"
"Explain it to me," I commanded, my voice cold as ice. "Because right now, I'm looking at a woman who helped torture our daughter."
"My mother is a psychopath," Laura whispered, looking up at me with terrified eyes. "She has controlled my entire life. When I met you, I thought I was free. But she found out... she found out about my past. Something I did when I was a teenager. Something she helped cover up."
"What did you do?"
"I... I was involved in an accident. A hit-and-run," Laura confessed, her voice barely audible. "A young boy died. I was driving my mother’s car. She covered it up, destroyed the evidence, but she kept the confession I wrote for her. She told me if I ever disobeyed her, if I ever tried to leave, she would send me to prison. And she would take Sophie away from both of us."
She wiped her tears, her hands trembling. "When you went on deployment, she started demanding more control. She said Sophie was getting rebellious. She threatened to release the confession if I didn't cooperate. She made me sign those papers, David. She told me if anything happened to you on deployment, Sophie would be hers. I only did it to keep her from destroying our lives! I thought... I thought I could manage her until you got back."
"You managed her by letting her freeze our daughter?" I asked, my anger burning hot. "You should have told me, Laura! I'm your husband! I would have protected you!"
"How?" Laura cried softly. "She has the police chief in her pocket! She has the evidence! She has everything!"

"Not anymore," I said, pointing to the USB drives and the ledger on the desk. "I have her records. I have thirty years of her abuse documented in her own handwriting. Your hit-and-run is past the statute of limitations, Laura. But child abuse, torture, and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud? Those don't go away."
Suddenly, the motel room window shattered.
