Chapter 8 - The Cornered Rat

I didn't drop my weapon. Instead, I raised the folder labeled with his name.

"I wouldn't do that, Chief Harris," I said, my voice echoing in the concrete vault room. "Inside this folder is the exact record of every bribe Evelyn has paid you over the last ten years. Complete with bank routing numbers and dates. If anything happens to us, this data is programmed to be automatically sent to the FBI, the state attorney general, and every major news outlet in Colorado."

Harris’s face drained of color. He looked at his guards, then back at me. "You're bluffing."

"Try me," I said, taking a step forward. "You're a cop, Harris. You know how this ends. Evelyn is going down. She's a sinking ship, and she will drag you down with her. Or, you can walk away right now, pretend you saw nothing, and maybe, just maybe, you can cut a deal with the feds before they knock on your door."

The guards looked at each other, uneasy. They weren't paid enough to get involved in a federal corruption scandal.

"Chief?" one of the guards whispered. "What do we do?"

Harris’s hand shook. He looked at the folder in my hand, then at Laura. He knew he was trapped.

"Get out of here," Harris muttered, lowering his gun. "But if I see you again, I'll shoot you myself."

May you like

"You won't see me again," I said. "But the FBI will."

We ran past them, taking the stairs to the roof. Vance's helicopter was already hovering, a searchlight cutting through the snow. We scrambled aboard, the engine roaring as we lifted off into the night sky, leaving the corrupt town of Aurora behind us.
