Chapter 9 - The Trial of Evelyn Vance

The next morning, the storm had cleared, leaving a pristine blanket of white snow over Denver. But for Evelyn, the storm was just beginning.
With Colonel Vance's help, we delivered the evidence to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The sheer volume of data—thirty years of recorded abuse, financial fraud, blackmail, and police corruption—was overwhelming.
By noon, federal agents raided Evelyn’s estate in Aurora.
She was arrested on her front lawn, handcuffed in her pristine designer coat, as news cameras captured her fall from grace. Chief Harris was arrested an hour later, along with several of Evelyn’s private security thugs.
The legal battle that followed was intense. Evelyn hired the best lawyers money could buy, attempting to plead insanity, then claiming the evidence was obtained illegally. But the federal prosecutors were relentless. The evidence was ironclad.
Laura took the stand. For the first time in her life, she stood up to her mother. She spoke clearly, courageously, recounting the years of abuse she had suffered, and the ultimate betrayal of her daughter.
"I was a victim of my mother's cruelty my entire life," Laura told the courtroom, her voice echoing with strength. "But I will not let my daughter be a victim. My mother is a monster, and she belongs behind bars."
When the verdict was read, Evelyn was found guilty on all counts, including child endangerment, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and blackmail. She was sentenced to twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal facility, without the possibility of parole. Due to her age, it was a life sentence.
