Chapter 2 - The Silent Covenant

The legal threat hung in the humid Georgia air like a suffocating fog. Emily stood behind Michael, her breathing shallow but her posture remarkably steady. She looked at Ashley not with the fear of a victim, but with the weary determination of a mother who had already survived the worst life could throw at her.
"They aren't bastards, Ashley," Emily spoke up, her voice quiet but carrying a piercing clarity that cut through Ashley’s arrogance. "Their names are Leo and Grace. And they carry their father's blood, no matter what kind of paper your lawyers are holding."
Ashley’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a flash of pure hatred. "Keep quiet, Emily. You’re a squatter in a state-run facility. You don't have a voice in this room."
"She has mine," Michael roared, stepping closer to Ashley, his fists clenched at his sides. "I don't care about the corporate shares, Ashley. I don't care about Carter Holdings. Take the company. Take the money. But you will never, ever touch my children or the woman I love again."
The secondary lawyer stepped forward, his expression neutral. "Mr. Carter, we are prepared to offer a structural settlement. If you proceed with the marriage ceremony next month and allow the corporate merger between Carter Holdings and Bennett Enterprises to conclude, Ms. Bennett will authorize a private trust fund of two million dollars for the maintenance of these children, provided they are relocated outside the state of California and face total non-disclosure."
"Go to hell," Michael said explicitly. "Get off this property before I call the county sheriff for trespassing on a state shelter facility."

Ashley took a slow step back, her eyes freezing over. "You’ve made a catastrophic mistake, Michael. You think you can live on love and sentimentality? Let's see how much your 'real family' enjoys watching you lose everything you’ve built since you were twenty-five."
As the black SUV peeled out of the parking lot, throwing gravel into the night air, Michael turned around to face Emily. The twins had fallen asleep against her chest, their small faces peaceful despite the storm raging around them. He reached out a hand, his fingers trembling, wanting so desperately to touch them, to touch her—but he stopped himself. He knew he hadn't earned the right to comfort her yet.
