Chapter 8 - The Legal Closure
The federal courthouse in Atlanta was quiet on the morning of the sentencing hearing. Ashley Bennett sat at the defense table, wearing a simple navy blue jumpsuit provided by the state correction facility. Her hair was unstyled, her makeup gone, and the sharp, venomous arrogance that had defined her presence for years had been replaced by a hollow, sullen look of defeat.
Harrison Bennett had already pleaded guilty to three counts of insider trading and was serving a seven-year sentence in a minimum-security facility in Alabama. Ashley was looking at four years for her role in the corporate conspiracy and grand larceny.
Michael and Emily sat in the front row of the gallery, their hands clasped together firmly. They didn't speak during the proceedings, and they didn't look at Ashley when she was led forward by the bailiffs to receive her final sentence.
"Given the extensive nature of the financial restructuring and the submission of the victim impact waiver by the Carter family," Judge Richard Evans announced, his gavel raised, "the defendant is sentenced to forty-eight months at the federal correctional institution in Marianna, followed by three years of supervised probation. Financial restitution to the estate of Emily Carter is ordered in the amount of one point two million dollars."
As Ashley was led out through the side door, she paused for a brief second, her eyes meeting Michael's one last time. There was no rage left in her—only the sudden, desperate realization that she had traded her entire life for a corporate empire she couldn't keep, while the man she had tried to ruin had found everything he ever needed in the simple woman she had dismissed.
Outside on the courthouse steps, the press rushed forward with cameras and microphones, shouting questions about the future of Carter Holdings and the historic settlement.

Michael stopped at the top of the stairs, pulling Emily close to his side as the cameras flashed.
"Carter Holdings is entering a permanent employee-owned trust structure," Michael announced clearly to the reporters. "And as for our personal lives, the only news we have to share is that the truth has prevailed. My family is home, and our corporate business is officially concluded."
