Chapter 9 - The Restoration of Vows

The spring brought an explosion of white and pink blossoms to the Savannah house. The oak trees in the backyard were thick with green leaves, their branches forming a natural, protective canopy over the lawn where a small wooden altar had been constructed.

It wasn't a grand corporate wedding with five hundred guests, politicians, and high-society designers. There were only eight people present—David Reynolds, who had become a close family friend; Emily’s mother, who had flown in from Ohio; Michael’s independent board members; and the two babies, who were now walking unsteadily through the grass, wearing miniature formal outfits that matched their parents.

Michael stood at the altar, his eyes fixed on the house door as it opened.

Emily stepped onto the grass, wearing a simple, elegant white linen dress. She didn't carry an expensive bouquet; she carried a single white rose, her face glowing with a peace that was deep, unshakeable, and entirely real.

When she reached his side, Michael took her hands in his, his voice thick with emotion as he spoke his vows into the quiet afternoon air.

"Emily," Michael said, his voice breaking as he looked down at her. "A year ago, I let a lie steal my vision. I chose my pride over your truth, and I let the world convince me that love was something you could calculate on a balance sheet. I cannot erase the miles you had to walk alone, but I promise to spend every step of the remaining road carrying you, protecting you, and listening to your voice above all others."

Emily smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek as she squeezed his hands. "Michael, the storm didn't just break our house—it washed away the foundation that was built on expectations. We built this new home out of the truth. I forgive you, Michael. Not because the pain didn't matter, but because the love that brought you back to that highway was stronger than the lie that drove us apart."

As the minister pronounced them husband and wife once again, Leo and Grace crawled over to their legs, pulling themselves up by their parents' clothes. Michael reached down, lifting both babies into his arms as Emily wrapped her arms around his neck, completing the circle that had been broken a year ago beneath the Georgia sun.
