Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the Evidence

By 2:00 AM, Michael had rented two rooms at a secure, clean hotel five miles away from the shelter, refusing to leave Emily and the babies exposed to any further surveillance from Ashley's team. He sat at the desk in his room, his laptop screen illuminating the dark space, while David Reynolds, the private investigator, sat on the edge of the bed surrounded by printouts of financial transactions.
"She wasn't working alone, Michael," David explained, adjusting his glasses. "Ashley's father, Harrison Bennett, has been shorting Carter Holdings stock for the last ninety days. They didn't just want to marry you for status. They wanted to trigger a hostile takeover by using your personal life as leverage. The divorce from Emily was Phase One—it isolated you from the one person who actually looked at the business data clearly."
Michael rubbed his face with his hands, the guilt crushing him. Emily had been a financial analyst before they married; she had warned him about the Bennett family’s logistics data discrepancies a year and a half ago. Instead of listening, he had allowed Ashley’s whispers of "Emily is just jealous of my family’s success" to poison his mind.
"And the hospital records?" Michael asked, his voice hollow.
"Ashley used a corrupt administrator at the county health facility," David said, sliding a copy of a wire transfer across the desk. "Ten thousand dollars paid directly to a nurse named Sarah Jenkins to flag any incoming calls or inquiries under your name and redirect them to a burner phone managed by Ashley's assistant. Emily tried to call you while she was in active labor with twins, Michael. The system told her the number was disconnected."
A soft knock on the connecting door interrupted them. Michael stood up quickly and opened it to find Emily standing there. She had changed into a clean shirt he had bought her from the 24-hour pharmacy down the street.
"David, can you give us a moment?" Emily asked gently.
The investigator nodded, gathering his papers and slipping out of the room into the main corridor.

Michael stood near the desk, feeling smaller than he ever had in his life. "Emily... I don't even know how to begin asking for your forgiveness. The things I said to you... the way I let them drive you out..."
"Michael," Emily said, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her. She didn't look at him with anger. "The past year has been a living nightmare. I washed dishes until my hands bled just to buy formula. But I didn't come into this room to watch you cry. I came here because Ashley wasn't lying about the corporate proxy. If she takes control of Carter Holdings tomorrow, she will liquidate the employee pension fund to cover her family's debts. We have to stop her, not just for us, but for the hundreds of people who depend on that company."
