Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Bennett

The presence of federal officials in the room changed the atmosphere instantly. The independent board members immediately distanced themselves from Harrison Bennett, moving their chairs away as if his corruption were contagious.

"This is an outrage!" Ashley screamed, her carefully curated composure completely shattering as she stood up, pointing a manicured finger at Emily. "She’s a discredited thief! Michael divorced her because she stole from his own mother!"

"The security footage from the residential estate has been recovered from the backup cloud server, Ms. Bennett," the senior SEC director stated calmly, pulling out an official warrant wrapper. "The footage clearly shows you entering the master bedroom on October 14th of last year with the diamond necklace in your purse and leaving without it. Furthermore, the witness who testified during the divorce proceedings has signed an affidavit admitting to perjury under your direct financial inducement."

Ashley looked at her father, but Harrison Bennett was already ignoring her, his hands shaking as he dialed his criminal defense attorney on his cell phone. The trap they had built for Michael and Emily had turned inward, crushing them completely within the span of thirty minutes.

"Harrison Bennett, Ashley Bennett," the director said, gesturing to the federal marshals waiting in the corridor. "You are requested to accompany us to the federal building for formal arraignment regarding charges of corporate conspiracy, grand larceny, and wire fraud."

As Ashley was led past Michael, her eyes were wide with a frantic, desperate panic. "Michael, please! We can fix this! I did it for us—I did it so we could be the most powerful couple in the city!"

Michael didn't look at her. He turned his back completely, walking over to where Emily stood near the windows. The sun was shining through the glass, illuminating her face, and for the first time in an entire year, the heavy, suffocating shadow of deception had completely cleared from his life.
