Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Folder

The interior of my car smelled of old fast food and the sharp, metallic tang of fear. As I pulled out of the grocery store parking lot, Noah went back to sleep in the back seat, clutching his stuffed dinosaur. Delilah sat in the passenger seat, staring straight ahead, her hands trembling as she held a thick, yellow manila folder against her chest.
"They didn't just kick me out, Mom," Delilah whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the tires. "They forced me to sign things. Evan... he isn't the man you think he is. Neither is his mother."
I kept my eyes on the road, my knuckles white against the steering wheel. "We are going to my house. You and Noah are going to take a hot shower, eat a real meal, and sleep in clean beds. Then, Delilah, you are going to tell me every single thing."
When we arrived at my home, the familiar warmth of the living room seemed to make Delilah collapse inward. After Noah was safely tucked into the guest room, Delilah sat at my kitchen table. She pushed the folder toward me.

"Open it," she said quietly. "This is what I found hidden in the floorboards of Evan’s home office on Tuesday night before they threw me out."
I opened the clasp and pulled out a stack of financial statements, legal deeds, and medical records. As an accountant with thirty years of experience, it took me less than two minutes to decode the numbers. My breath caught in my throat. Evan hadn't just been controlling Delilah; he and his mother, Beatrice, had been using my daughter's identity to run a massive, fraudulent real estate scheme.
