Chapter 5 - Tipping the Domino

The notary, a nervous young man named Marcus, worked out of a dingy title office on the outskirts of the city. When I walked in with my laptop and a recorder, he tried to tell me he was busy.

"Marcus," I said, sitting across from him. "I'm a senior forensic accountant. I’ve already traced the $10,000 wire transfer from Beatrice Mercer’s personal account to your cousin's bank account the day this mortgage was signed."

Marcus turned pale. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"You have two choices," I said smoothly. "You can wait for the FBI to show up for bank fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy—which carries a fifteen-year federal sentence. Or you can sign an affidavit right now stating Beatrice and Evan forced you to notarize a forged signature. If you cooperate, my attorney will ask the prosecutor for leniency."

Marcus stared at the evidence on my screen. His hands began to shake. "She told me... Beatrice told me Karen was her sister and she was too sick to come to the office."

"Write it down," I said, sliding a blank document across the desk. "Every single word."
