Chapter 7 - The Arrest at the Colonial

The courtroom victory was only the beginning. By Thursday morning, the state prosecutor had reviewed the fraud evidence.

I stood on the sidewalk across from the colonial house as three police cruisers pulled into the driveway. Neighbors gathered on their porches, whispering as the officers marched up the front steps.

Evan was led out first, his hands cuffed behind his back, his head hung low. He looked entirely different without the shield of his mother's arrogance. Beatrice followed a moment later, screaming obscenities at the officers, her expensive sunglasses falling onto the grass as she was pushed into the back of a police car.

Delilah stood beside me, watching the scene. For the first time in five years, the heavy shadow of fear left her eyes.

"They're gone, Mom," she whispered.

"They're never coming back, Delilah," I said, wrapping my arm around her shoulder. "Now, we clean out the house."
