Chapter 14 - Into the Warehouse

Midnight. Rain slicked the pavement of the industrial park, reflecting the cold sodium lights of the overhead streetlamps. Fog rolled off the nearby river, cloaking the concrete structures in dark grey mist.

Claire sat in the passenger seat of James's blacked-out SUV, wearing non-attributable tactical gear, her hair pulled tight into a low bun. James was in the driver's seat, checking his suppressed sidearm, while Sarah—Claire’s trusted friend and former squad mate—sat in the back, monitoring live video feeds from a drone hovering high above the clouds.

"Thermal feed shows four armed guards on the perimeter," Sarah reported in a quiet whisper. "Two inside the main office floor where the server stack is located. No movement on the outer gates."

"Marcus has bypassed their perimeter alarms for a six-minute window," James said, checking his watch. "Once we go through that side access door, we have six minutes to get to the main server, download the direct access logs, and plant our tracer before the automated ping alerts their off-site security command."

"Six minutes is plenty," Claire said calmly. "Movement on my mark. Go."

They moved like ghosts through the shadows. Claire led the team, her movements fluid, silent, and precise. Reaching the side entrance of the Aegis Freight warehouse, James applied an electronic lock bypass device to the keycard reader. The light flickered from red to soft green, and the door clicked open.

They slipped inside, sliding into the darkness behind a stack of shipping crates. The air inside smelled of ozone, diesel fuel, and damp concrete. Above them, heavy iron catwalks spanned the vast ceiling.

"Two guards on the lower floor, moving left to right," Sarah radioed from her position outside holding security. "Clear to move toward the office stairs."

Claire signaled James. They darted between the crates, reaching the base of the metal staircase leading to the glass-walled administrative offices. Through the reinforced glass, the green and blue lights of a massive blade-server rack glowed in the dark.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door at the top of the stairs swung open.

A guard stepped out, holding a flashlight and an automatic rifle. His beam swept down the stairs, catching James’s boot in the bright white light.

"Intruders!" the guard yelled into his shoulder radio.

Before the guard could raise his weapon, Claire exploded up the stairs. She grabbed the barrel of the rifle, forcing it upward as a muffled shot shattered the ceiling light overhead. In one fluid motion, she slammed her forearm into the guard's throat, executed a hip throw, and brought him hard onto the steel catwalk, knocking the wind completely out of his lungs.

James was right behind her, securing the guard with zip-ties and taking his access keycard.

"Alarm tripped!" Marcus shouted over the com-link. "Off-site command just received a silent panic signal! You have two minutes before armed response arrives!"

"Get the server data!" Claire commanded, stepping inside the server room.

James jammed a high-speed data extraction drive directly into the primary server blade. Progress bars flashed rapidly across the digital screen: 10%... 30%... 60%...

"Come on..." James muttered.

Outside the office, the heavy main doors of the warehouse blew open. Flashlights cut through the dark as four heavily armed contractors rushed into the building, weapons raised.
