Chapter 17 - The Confrontation

0815 Hours. The morning sun broke through the grey clouds, illuminating the sprawling military installation. Flags whipped smartly in the crisp spring morning air.

Inside the Headquarters Building of the 3rd Battalion, the corridors were quiet. Soldiers stood at attention as officers walked past.

Claire sat at her large wooden desk in the Battalion Commander’s office. She wore her immaculate Class-A dress uniform, her medals pinned precisely over her heart. She looked cool, poised, and utterly unflappable.

Sitting in the leather chairs across from her were Colonel Ethan Hayes and two senior special agents from the Department of Defense Office of the Inspector General—officers who had been quietly briefed by James and Marcus four hours earlier with the unassailable evidence pulled from the Aegis warehouse.

At 0828 hours, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway outside.

The heavy oak doors of Claire’s office slammed open.

General Arthur Sterling stepped into the room, flanked by two armed Military Police escorts. Sterling was a broad-shouldered man with iron-grey hair, cold blue eyes, and a chest covered in service ribbons. His face was a mask of triumphant authority.

"Lieutenant Colonel Vance!" Sterling boomed, stepping forward. "Step away from that terminal immediately! MP, secure her computer!"

Claire did not stand up. She did not blink. She simply folded her hands calmly on her desk.

"Good morning, General Sterling," Claire said smoothly. "You're early for the 0900 briefing."

"The briefing is canceled!" Sterling sneered, waving a paper in his hand. "Counterintelligence just detected an unauthorized wipe protocol originating from this exact desk. You are under arrest for espionage, grand theft of military property, and treason."

"Are you quite finished, General?" Colonel Ethan Hayes asked, standing up slowly from his armchair in the corner of the room.

Sterling froze, noticing Ethan and the two federal special agents for the first time. A flicker of uncertainty crossed his hardened face. "Hayes? What are you doing here? This woman is a traitor. Her ghost key—"

"—Is currently broadcasting live telemetry from your personal off-shore account in Switzerland, General," the lead FBI Special Agent said, stepping forward and placing a tablet on Claire's desk.

The screen displayed real-time financial tracking, detailing twenty-four separate wire transfers from Victoria Vance’s holding companies directly to a shell bank account registered under General Arthur Sterling’s middle name.

Sterling’s face drained of all color. "This... this is a fabrication. A fake!"

"We raided Aegis Freight's warehouse four hours ago, General," the agent continued coldly. "Victoria Vance was arrested at her estate thirty minutes ago. She has already agreed to a full deposition in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table. She gave you up in the first five minutes."

Sterling stumbled back half a step, looking at Claire as if seeing her for the very first time.

Claire stood up slowly. She walked around her desk, standing inches from the high-ranking officer who had tried to destroy her life from the shadows.

"You thought I was weak because of what Julian did to me," Claire said softly, her voice echoing with absolute authority in the silent room. "You thought I was just collateral damage in your little empire. But you forgot one thing, General."

She stepped closer, her eyes fixing him with a cold, terrifying light.

"I don't break. And I don't give up ground. MPs, take this officer into custody."

The military police officers hesitated for a fraction of a second, then stepped past Sterling, stripping the general of his sidearm and placing him in heavy iron handcuffs. Sterling said nothing as he was led out of the office, his head hanging low, his boots dragging on the polished floor.
