Chapter 8 - The Home Fires

Six months later.

The front porch of 442 Elm Street was lit with warm, amber string lights. The garden in front of the house was thriving with fresh hydrangeas, roses, and lavender.

Inside, the scent of slow-roasted garlic and herbs filled the air.

James Ramsey sat at my kitchen island, sipping a glass of cabernet while watching me chop fresh basil. He wore a simple gray sweater and dark jeans, looking completely relaxed, happy, and at home.

"You chop vegetables with disturbing military precision, Lieutenant Colonel," James teased, smiling as he reached over to slide a small piece of bell pepper into his mouth.

"It’s called efficiency, Colonel," I laughed, playfully tapping the back of his hand with the flat side of my knife.

Over the past six months, James and I had built a relationship grounded in mutual respect, quiet strength, and genuine partnership. We ran trails together on weekend mornings, cooked together, discussed strategy and military logistics, and shared quiet evenings without feeling the need to fill the air with empty words.

With James, I never had to hide my strength. I never had to shrink myself so he could feel bigger. He celebrated my promotions, respected my rank, and held my hand with a quiet, fierce pride that filled every corner of my soul.

"I got the transfer approval today," James said softly, setting his wine glass down.

I paused my chopping, looking up at him. "And?"

"I’m assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon starting next month," James smiled, his hazel eyes shining. "Permanent duty station. No more long deployments overseas. I'm staying right here."

A deep, radiant warmth bloomed in my chest. "That’s amazing news, James."

James stood up from his stool, walked around the island, and stepped into my space. He reached out, gently taking the knife from my hand and setting it safely on the cutting board. Then he took both of my hands in his.

"Claire," he said, his voice dropping into a low, tender register. "I know you spent years protecting yourself. I know you built armor around your heart because someone you trusted broke it."

He looked into my eyes with absolute sincerity.

"I don't ever want you to put that armor away if you need it," James continued gently. "But I want you to know... as long as I’m alive, you’ll never have to fight alone again."

I looked at this honorable, strong man who loved me not despite my strength, but because of it.

"I know, James," I whispered, stepping closer until my head rested against his broad chest. "I know."
