Chapter 19 - Promises in the Park

The warm evening breeze fluttered through the blooming apple trees as Claire and James walked hand-in-hand through the town park. The sky above was a stunning tapestry of violet, deep indigo, and shimmering rose gold.
Claire wore a soft cream-colored sweater and jeans, her hand wrapped snugly inside James's warm, strong grip. They walked in comfortable, easy silence, listening to the soft murmur of the nearby river and the distant laughter of children playing near the fountain.
"You've been quiet all evening," Claire said softly, bumping her shoulder against his. "What's on your mind, Commander?"
James stopped walking under the shade of a massive, ancient oak tree whose branches spread wide over the riverbank. He turned to face her, looking into her dark eyes with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
"I was just thinking about the first day you walked into my security office," James said softly, reaching up to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "You were carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. You were wounded, angry, and so determined to protect yourself that you wouldn't let anyone get close."
"I was terrified," Claire admitted softly. "I thought loving someone meant giving up control over your own life."
"And now?" James asked, his voice low and tender.
"Now I know that real love doesn't take away your strength," Claire said, looking up at him with complete, unshakeable trust. "It multiplies it."
James smiled, his eyes gleaming in the twilight. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a small, square black leather box.
Claire’s heart gave a sudden, joyous leap.
James dropped down to one knee on the soft green grass. He opened the box, revealing a stunning platinum ring featuring an emerald-cut diamond flanked by two small, brilliant blue sapphires—the color of her military branch.
"Claire," James said, his voice steady and deep. "You are the strongest, most brilliant, and most incredible woman I have ever known. You rebuilt your life from nothing, you conquered every enemy that tried to stand in your way, and you showed me what true partnership looks like. I don't want to just walk beside you through the calm days. I want to stand beside you through every storm life ever throws at us."
He looked up into her eyes, his expression completely vulnerable and filled with unconditional devotion.
"Claire Vance... will you marry me?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness shimmered in Claire's eyes, catching the golden evening light. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," she whispered, her voice overflowing with emotion. "Yes, James. A thousand times, yes."
May you like
James slipped the ring onto her finger, standing up and pulling her into his arms. He lifted her off her feet, spinning her around under the canopy of blooming trees as she laughed—a bright, clear, effortless sound that echoed across the quiet park.
When he set her back down, he cupped her face and kissed her deeply, sealing a promise that no threat, no past shadow, and no enemy could ever break.
