Chapter 18 - Clearing the Past

The fallout from General Sterling’s arrest sent shockwaves through the highest levels of the defense department. Over the next three weeks, the corporate syndicate Victoria Vance had constructed was completely dismantled by federal authorities. Every asset connected to the Vance family was seized, and Julian’s remaining appeals were permanently dismissed by the military court.

For Claire, the victory was total and absolute. The Department of the Army issued a formal commendation clearing her name of any legacy association with the Vance family enterprise, citing her "extraordinary tactical initiative and unwavering integrity under fire."

On a quiet Friday afternoon, Claire stood in her office, packing up a few personal files. The sun streamed through the large glass windows, casting warm golden light across her pristine mahogany desk.

A knock sounded at the open door.

Colonel Ethan Hayes stepped inside, carrying a small, velvet-lined wooden box.

"Sir," Claire said, standing and coming to attention.

"At ease, Claire," Ethan smiled, waving his hand. "I'm not here as your superior today. I'm here as a friend."

He set the velvet box on her desk and popped the latch open. Inside lay a brand-new pair of silver oak leaves—the insignia of a full Colonel.

Claire looked up, stunned. "Ethan... my promotion to Lieutenant Colonel was only confirmed six months ago."

"The Pentagon review board met yesterday," Ethan explained, his eyes shining with pride. "In light of your exceptional leadership, your tactical dismantling of a major internal security threat, and your flawless command performance, the Secretary of the Army personally authorized your accelerated promotion to full Colonel."

Claire looked down at the gleaming silver insignia. Two years ago, she had been fighting just to keep her rank of Captain while her ex-fiancé tried to throw her in prison. Now, she was one of the youngest full Colonels in the active force.

"You earned this, Claire," Ethan said gently. "Not because of what you suffered, but because of who you proved yourself to be when the world tried to crush you."

"Thank you, Ethan," Claire said, her voice rich with emotion. "For always believing in me."

"Always," Ethan smiled. "Now get out of here. Your man has been waiting outside in his truck for fifteen minutes, and if I know James, he's planning something special tonight."
