Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The marble foyer felt as cold as a tomb. Lily’s whisper hung in the air: “This wasn’t the first time, Daddy.”
A wave of ice rushed through Michael’s veins. He tightened his arms around six-year-old Lily and eight-year-old Ethan, shielding them completely with his body. Beneath his hands, both children were shaking uncontrollably.
He looked down at Ethan. Beneath the sleeve of his boy's navy blue sweater, dark contusions bloomed across the delicate skin of his wrists—fingerprint marks. Older, fading yellow-green bruises were visible near his elbow.
Michael slowly stood up, keeping both children firmly behind his back. The warmth in his eyes had vanished completely, replaced by an absolute, terrifying stillness.
Vanessa straightened her black satin dress, smoothing down the fabric with manicured hands. She didn't look remorseful. Her eyebrows pulled together into a scowl of pure irritation.
“Don’t give me that dramatic look, Michael,” Vanessa said, her voice dripping with condescension. “You come home unexpectedly and act like I’m a monster. They disobeyed me. Ethan spilled juice on the velvet armchair, and Lily had the audacity to talk back when I corrected him. A mother has a right to discipline her children.”
“Discipline?” Michael’s voice was dangerously low. “You were about to strike a six-year-old girl with a wooden hanger, Vanessa. Look at Ethan’s arms!”
Vanessa sneered. “They are dramatic. They bruise easily. They aren't my children, Michael. They’re the pathetic little remnants of your dead ex-wife. And every single time I look at them, I’m reminded that I’ll always be second place in your mind.”
The cruel truth settled into the room like poison.
“Pack your things,” Michael said, his voice absolute. “Get out of my house. Right now.”
Michael reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, calling his corporate lawyer and personal head of security, Harrison. “Harrison? I need you at the house immediately. Bring security, bring a medical examiner, and notify the police. There has been child abuse in my home.”
Vanessa’s face instantly drained of color. The wooden hanger slipped from her manicured fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor.
“Are you insane?!” she screamed. “You think you can kick me to the curb? My lawyer will tear you apart! Check your corporate accounts tomorrow morning, big shot. Let’s see who really loses everything!”

With that venomous threat, she turned and sprinted up the stairs toward her dressing room to gather her belongings before the police arrived. Michael scooped both Lily and Ethan into his arms, pulling them into the warmth and safety of his chest.
“I’m so sorry,” Michael whispered into Lily’s hair. “Daddy’s here now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
