Chapter 9 - Shadows Erased

A year passed.

Ethan’s nightmares had ceased completely. He no longer flinched when someone made a sudden movement, and he proudly wore short-sleeved shirts, his skin smooth and free of any marks.

On a warm autumn afternoon, the family held a small gathering at their estate. Mrs. Higgins was invited as an honored family guest, along with Dr. Clara and Harrison.

Ethan ran up to the microphone set up near the garden pavilion where everyone was chatting. He cleared his throat loudly, making everyone turn around.

“I want to give a speech!” eight-year-old Ethan announced proudly, wearing a tiny blazer that matched his father’s.

The guests clapped enthusiastically. Michael smiled, taking a seat beside Lily.

Ethan looked straight at his father, his eyes bright with confidence and love.

“When I was little, I thought heroes only lived in comic books and wore capes,” Ethan spoke into the mic, his voice steady. “But my dad doesn't wear a cape. He wears a suit, and he came through the door right when we needed him most. He sacrificed everything to keep us safe, and he taught me how to be brave.”

Michael felt a warm tear slide down his cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of guilt or sorrow—it was pure, overwhelming pride.

Lily jumped up from her chair, clapping her hands. “Yay for Daddy!”
