Chapter 4 - The Hidden Evidence

Finding Mrs. Higgins proved difficult. Vanessa had paid her off and threatened her family to keep her quiet after firing her for trying to intervene during an abusive incident.
Michael personally drove to a quiet suburb three hours away to meet the elderly woman at a small diner.
“Mr. Carter,” Mrs. Higgins wept, holding a handkerchief to her eyes. “I tried to tell you! I left three voicemails on your personal office line months ago, but Vanessa’s assistant blocked your calls!”
“I know, Mrs. Higgins,” Michael said gently, pushing a box of tissue toward her. “And I don't blame you. But I need your help now. My children need your help.”
Mrs. Higgins reached into her handbag and pulled out a small black USB flash drive.
“When I worked in the mansion, I noticed Vanessa acting strangely whenever you were out of the country,” Mrs. Higgins explained. “I installed a hidden nanny cam inside the playroom clock because I was worried for the kids. I recorded everything before she caught me and threw me out.”
Michael took the flash drive, his fingers trembling slightly. “Does this show what she did to them?”

“It shows everything, Mr. Carter,” Mrs. Higgins said grimly. “It shows her hitting them, locking them in the wine cellar, and it also shows Julian Vance coming into your private study late at night, copying files from your safe.”
Michael closed his hand tightly around the drive. “You just saved my family, Mrs. Higgins.”
