Chapter 2 - The Cold Reality
Within thirty minutes, the mansion was flooded with red and blue emergency lights. Harrison arrived first, followed by two uniformed police officers and a child protective services investigator named Officer Ramirez.
Vanessa was escorted down the grand staircase in handcuffs, screaming obscenities at Michael and swearing vengeance.
“You’ll regret this, Michael!” she shrieked as she was pressed into the back of the police cruiser. “You have no idea what’s coming for you!”
While the police documented the scene, a paramedic thoroughly examined Ethan and Lily in the living room. Michael sat beside them, gripping Ethan’s hand while Lily rested her head on his knee.
“Mr. Carter,” the paramedic whispered, pulling Michael aside into the hallway. “The physical marks on Ethan’s arms match severe force pressure. Furthermore, both children show clear signs of emotional trauma and malnutrition. This hasn't been going on for days—it’s been months.”
Guilt punched Michael square in the chest. “I was traveling for the merger... I trusted her.”
Harrison stepped up, holding a tablet with a solemn expression. “Michael, we have a bigger problem. Vanessa wasn't lying before she left. I just ran a preliminary audit on your offshore holdings and Carter Enterprises’ primary liquidity accounts.”
Michael frowned, rubbing his weary eyes. “What did she do?”
“She didn't act alone,” Harrison revealed, zooming in on a series of recent wire transfers. “Over the past six months, millions of dollars have been systematically siphoned out of your operational funds into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. And the co-signatory on those accounts isn't just Vanessa... it’s Julian Vance.”
