Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

The white noise of the hospital’s heart monitors was the only sound keeping me anchored. Clara lay asleep, hooked to IV drips delivering fluids, iron, and liquid nutrition into her frail body. Her pale face looked translucent, and the dark circles under her eyes spoke of months of silent, agonizing torment. My suit jacket was still wrapped around her shoulders.

Mark Vance, my head of security, stepped into the room. "Boss, we’ve secured the house. Your mother and her friends are gone. I brought the primary hard drives from the home surveillance system and the financial records."

I stepped into the adjoining sitting room. "Show me."

The RAW video feeds revealed a horror I never imagined. Three months ago: my mother, Eleanor, snatched Clara’s prenatal vitamins and dumped them in the garbage, shoving her against the counter. “You’re nothing but a gutter rat. You don’t get luxury meals. You eat what I leave for you, or you eat nothing at all.”

Two months ago: my younger brother, Julian, dumped Clara’s catered dinner into the trash while demanding $5,000 from her. “If you tell Sebastian, I’ll tell him you’ve been sleeping with the gardener. Who do you think he’ll believe?”

Then came the financial records. Over $1.2 million stolen from my accounts in six months: $450,000 wired to Julian’s offshore account, $320,000 in rare jewelry, $180,000 in private jet charters. Meanwhile, Eleanor had canceled Clara’s specialist appointments, threatening to have her declared mentally unfit if she spoke a word.

When Clara woke up, she wept, terrified that she had failed me. "I wanted to sit down... she said I was a burden..."

"You are the reason I breathe," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "They are completely, utterly finished."

My attorney, Arthur Pendelton, arrived shortly after. We prepared a three-pronged attack: felony embezzlement, aggravated domestic abuse, and corporate termination. Right on cue, Eleanor called my phone, screaming that her cards were declined at the Ritz-Carlton.

"You have six hours to return everything you stole," I told her coldly over speakerphone. "If you fail, you and Julian will face felony charges."

"I am your mother! Julian had gambling debts! I had to save him!" she shrieked.

"Then you can share a cell with him," I said, and hung up.
