Chapter 7 - THE TIDES TURN

Deep within the misty, sunless pine forest of Tapalpa, Valeria was crouched behind a moss-covered boulder, her chest heaving.

Mateo sat beside her, clutching his mother's jacket, trembling but remarkably quiet, sensing the mortal danger. Baby Elena was tucked securely inside Valeria’s zipped coat, lulled into a stressed silence by the rhythm of her mother's rapid heartbeat.

Valeria peeked around the side of the rock. The fog was so dense it felt like living water, twisting and coiling between the dark tree trunks.

In the distance, she heard footsteps—heavy tactical boots crunching over dry pine needles and twigs.

"Valeria!" a voice called out through the mist. It was smooth, calm, and hauntingly familiar. It was Carlos. "Valeria, it's safe! The attackers have been cleared! Come out, I'm here to take you and the kids to Victoria's compound!"

Valeria’s hand tightened around the grip of her pistol. Something felt wrong. Very wrong.

If Carlos had truly cleared the attackers at the front gate, why hadn't he called her satellite phone? Why had he tracked her deep into the northern pass instead of securing the perimeter? And why was he walking alone, without tactical cover?

She reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and glanced at the screen. Zero signal—the jammer was active. But then she noticed a small green light blinking on her encrypted emergency transceiver—a secondary device Gabriel had given her, which only activated if an allied signal was within two miles.

The light wasn't glowing green. It was flashing red—indicating a compromised perimeter code that Gabriel had preset in case of internal betrayal.

Valeria felt a wave of icy horror wash over her. Carlos wasn't her savior. He was her hunter.

"Valeria!" Carlos’s voice came closer, barely thirty feet away now. "Don't make this difficult! Gabriel is dead! He walked into a trap in Guadalajara! You have nowhere left to go!"

Hearing those words—Gabriel is dead—sent a agonizing spike through Valeria’s heart, threatening to crush her spirit. But looking down at Mateo’s frightened eyes, and feeling Elena’s soft breath against her ribs, a terrifying, unshakeable rage ignited deep within her soul.

Whether Gabriel was alive or dead, she was his wife. She was the mother of his children. She would not bow to these monsters.

"Stay here, Mateo," she whispered, her voice colder than the mountain wind. "Do not move. Do not make a sound."

She slipped out from behind the boulder, moving silently like a phantom through the thick underbrush, circling around Carlos’s flank.

Carlos was walking slowly, his assault rifle raised, scanning the fogged tree line. "Valeria! Give me the silver medallion! Give me the key to the ledgers, and I’ll let you and the kids live on a beach in South America! Victoria and I just want what we were promised!"

"You'll get what you deserve, Carlos," Valeria’s voice echoed from behind a thick pine tree to his left.

Carlos spun around, raising his rifle, but Valeria was already moving.

She stepped out from the fog, aiming her pistol with two hands. Before Carlos could acquire his target, Valeria squeezed the trigger three times.

PAK! PAK! PAK!

The heavy 9mm rounds hit Carlos squarely in his tactical vest. The impact knocked him backward, sending his rifle flying into the brush. He hit the ground hard, gasping for air as the ballistic plate absorbed the kinetic shock, bruising his ribs and knocking the wind out of him.

Before he could draw his sidearm, Valeria was over him. She kicked his handgun away into the dirt and pressed the hot barrel of her gun directly between his eyes.

"You betrayed us," Valeria snarled, her dark eyes flashing with pure vengeance. "After everything we shared! After my husband treated you like a brother!"

Carlos stared up at her, coughing blood, his eyes wide with shock at the lethal determination in the eyes of the woman he thought was just a fragile mother.

"Where... where is Victoria?" Valeria demanded, pulling back the hammer of the pistol.

"She... she's at Punta Mita..." Carlos rasped out, terrified. "Julian... Julian has a boat waiting... They are meeting Gabriel there..."

"You said Gabriel was dead!"

"I lied!" Carlos choked out. "He's on his way there! It's a trap, Valeria! Julian has a sniper team on the lighthouse roof!"

Valeria did not hesitate. She swung the heavy grip of her pistol down hard onto Carlos's temple, knocking him unconscious cold.

She quickly stripped him of his zip-ties, bound his hands and feet tightly to a nearby pine tree, took his radio and spare magazines, and sprinted back to where Mateo was waiting.

She picked up Mateo in her left arm, holding Elena tight, and looked toward the mountain road. She had to get to Punta Mita. She had to save her husband.
