Chapter 8 - The Trial of Betrayal

Two months later, the Federal Criminal Court of Jalisco was packed for the trial of State v. Roberto Vale.

The scandal had dominated the regional headlines: "THE SEA BROTHER’S REVENGE: MILLIONAIRE DEVELOPER ARRESTED FOR STARVING BROTHER’S FAMILY."

Roberto sat at the defense table, wearing a faded orange prison jumpsuit. In two months of pre-trial detention, his arrogant posture had completely vanished. He looked thin, terrified, and utterly defeated. Beside him sat a court-appointed public defender who looked overwhelmed by the sheer volume of evidence against his client.

On the prosecution side sat Victoria Sandoval and Gabriel.

In the second row of the audience sat Valeria. She wore a beautiful, elegant navy-blue dress. Her skin was glowing, her dark hair restored to its natural shine, her posture upright and proud. Beside her sat Mateo, dressed in a neat little suit, holding a drawing book, completely recovered under the care of top pediatric specialists.

When Valeria took the witness stand, the courtroom fell into absolute silence.

She spoke clearly, her voice trembling slightly at first, but gaining strength with every sentence. She detailed the three years of terror—how Roberto had withheld Gabriel's money, how he had confiscated her documents, how he had forced her to sleep in the cold storage shed, and how she had been forced to pick through trash bins to keep their child alive.

When the prosecutor presented the medical records from the day Gabriel found them—showing Mateo’s severe malnutrition and Valeria’s advanced stage of anemia—several members of the jury wiped away tears.

Roberto’s attorney attempted a brief cross-examination, trying to argue that Roberto was merely holding the funds in trust due to market instability, but Victoria presented thirty-six months of bank statements showing direct transfers from the trust account into high-stakes gambling accounts and luxury vehicle leases.

It took the jury less than thirty minutes to reach a unanimous verdict.

"On the count of Grand Embezzlement and Wire Fraud: Guilty." "On the count of Unlawful Imprisonment: Guilty." "On the count of Felony Child Endangerment and Criminal Neglect: Guilty."

The judge slammed his wooden gavel down hard.

"Roberto Vale," the judge declared sternly, looking down at the shaking man. "Your actions represent a level of familial cruelty that borders on the monstrous. You stole from the brother who trusted you, and you tortured a defenseless mother and child while living in luxury paid for by their suffering."

The judge delivered the sentence: Eighteen years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary, along with a full restitution order of twenty million pesos to be paid through the complete liquidation of all his personal and commercial assets.

As the guards handcuffed Roberto and led him toward the rear exit, he paused, looking at Gabriel with weeping, desperate eyes.

"Gabriel..." Roberto choked out, his voice cracking. "Please... I’m your brother..."

Gabriel looked at him, his face calm, his heart finally free from the pain of betrayal.

"I had a brother once," Gabriel said softly. "He died three years ago when I boarded that ship."
