Chapter 9 - THE FINAL RECKONING

The interior of the lighthouse echoed with the thunder of gunfire and the roaring storm outside.

Gabriel cleared the stairs two steps at a time, dodging blind fire coming from the upper platform. Behind him, Valeria entered the base of the tower, providing covering fire with her shotgun, her shots blowing away the wooden beams and forcing Julian’s remaining guard back.

Gabriel reached the top platform. He tackled the remaining mercenary through the rusted glass window of the lamp room, sending both of them crashing onto the rain-slicked exterior catwalk forty feet above the rocky ocean cliffs.

The mercenary swung a heavy tactical knife, slashing at Gabriel’s chest. Gabriel blocked the blade with his forearms, grabbing the attacker’s wrist, twisting it until the bone snapped with a sickening crack. He slammed the operative against the iron railing and threw him over into the abyssal waves below.

Gabriel turned, breathing heavily, rain wiping through his hair.

Standing on the catwalk, backed against the edge with nowhere left to run, were Victoria Sandoval and Julian. Julian had pulled a chrome pistol, holding Victoria tightly in front of him as a human shield, pointing the weapon directly at Gabriel’s chest.

"It's over, Gabriel!" Julian shouted frantically, his polished exterior completely shattered by panic. "Give me the medallion, or I kill her and drop us both into the sea!"

Victoria was sobbing, her composure entirely gone, staring at Gabriel with eyes full of deep regret and terror. "Gabriel... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."

Before Gabriel could speak, Valeria stepped out onto the upper catwalk from the inner door. Her shotgun was leveled directly at Julian’s head.

"Put the gun down, Julian," Valeria commanded, her voice steady despite the howling gale. "There are no boats waiting for you. Ramos’s coast guard cutters have already seized your vessel."

Julian looked over the railing and saw the flashing red and blue lights of two naval patrol ships closing in on the cove below, their searchlights illuminating the turbulent white sea spray.

He was trapped. Completely surrounded by land, sea, and air.

"If I go down..." Julian screamed, his eyes wild with desperate madness, "I take everything with me!"

He shifted his gun away from Victoria, aiming it directly at Valeria!

"NO!" Gabriel roared.

Gabriel threw his body forward in a desperate, blinding sprint. As Julian pulled the trigger, Gabriel shoved Valeria out of the line of fire.

BANG!

The bullet tore through Gabriel’s shoulder, sending a spray of red into the white rain. But Gabriel’s momentum didn't stop. He slammed into Julian with the force of a freight train, shattering the rusted iron safety railing!

Both men plunged off the edge of the lighthouse catwalk into the dark abyss below.

"GABRIEL!" Valeria screamed in pure, unspeakable agony, rushing to the edge of the broken railing, reaching out into the dark storm.

Down below, the two bodies slammed into the violent, churning water at the base of the cliffs.

Valeria didn't hesitate. She threw off her heavy coat, ignored Victoria’s frantic cries, and dove straight off the cliff after her husband into the roaring, icy sea.

She cut through the waves, swimming through the dark, turbulent water with every ounce of strength in her soul. She saw Gabriel’s body sinking beneath the foam, heavy with his gear.

Valeria kicked wildly, plunging beneath the surface, reaching down into the dark ocean depths. Her fingers locked around Gabriel’s jacket collar. She pulled him toward her, fighting the crushing current, kicking with fierce, motherly, eternal desperation until her lungs screamed for air.

She broke the surface, gasping for breath, hauling Gabriel’s head above the water as Commander Ramos’s rescue boat roared toward them through the waves, throwing a life ring into the foam.

"I have you!" Valeria sobbed, holding Gabriel’s pale face against her shoulder as the storm raged around them. "I have you, Gabriel! Don't you leave me! Don't you dare leave me!"

Gabriel’s eyes fluttered open slowly, spitting out sea water. He looked up into the rain-streaked, beautiful face of his wife, coughing, a faint, weak smile touching his lips.

"I promised you..." Gabriel rasped out, his hand feebly reaching up to touch her cheek, "the storm... would end..."
