Chapter 4 - Safe Harbor

Twenty minutes later, Gabriel sat in the back of a taxi holding his sleeping son. Beside him, Valeria was staring out the window at the passing city lights, her hand gripped tightly in Gabriel’s. She was still trembling, unable to process that she was finally outside the gates of Roberto’s estate.
Gabriel had called a high-end residential hotel in the district of Providencia, booking a luxury two-bedroom suite for a month using his private credit card—an account Roberto knew nothing about.
When they arrived at the hotel, the staff initially looked surprised by Valeria’s appearance, but one look at Gabriel’s sharp, authoritative demeanor and his platinum card quickly silenced any questions.
"Get us the best room," Gabriel told the manager quietly. "And send up hot soup, fresh fruit, warm milk, and clean clothes immediately."
Inside the warm, carpeted suite, Gabriel helped Valeria into the modern bathroom. He filled the large tub with warm water, gently helping her off with the torn, dirty robe.
When he saw her bare body under the bright bathroom lights, Gabriel had to turn his head to hide his fresh tears.
Her ribs were visible beneath her skin. Dark bruises marked her hips and ankles—marks from sleeping on the bare concrete floor of the storage shed behind Roberto's kitchen. Her hands were raw and calloused from washing heavy party dishes in ice-cold water.
"He... he made me work in the kitchen every day," Valeria whispered, sinking into the warm water with a soft sigh of relief. "He told the servants I was a distant relative who was mentally ill and couldn't be allowed outside. He took my ID, my phone, Mateo’s birth certificate... everything."
Gabriel knelt beside the tub, taking a soft washcloth and gently washing the dirt from her shoulders.
"Why didn't you try to run to the police, Valeria?" he asked gently.
"I tried once," she wept softly, covering her face with her wet hands. "Six months ago. I made it to the main gate. Roberto caught me. He brought out a lawyer—a man who works for his real estate firm. They showed me papers claiming I was an unfit mother. They said if I said a word to anyone, they would have me committed to a state asylum and put Mateo in an orphanage before you ever returned. I was so scared, Gabriel... I was so alone..."
Gabriel leaned over, wrapping his arms around her wet shoulders, pressing his lips against her temple.
"You’re not alone anymore," Gabriel swore softly into her hair. "I swear to you on my life, Valeria, they will pay for every second you suffered."
After a warm bath and a quiet meal of hot chicken soup, Mateo fell fast asleep in a plush king-sized bed, clutching a brand-new teddy bear the hotel concierge had brought up. Valeria lay beside him, her hand holding Gabriel’s fingers as if she feared he might vanish if she let go.
Once they were both fast asleep, Gabriel walked out onto the balcony overlooking the city skyline.
He pulled out his satellite phone—the secure phone he used to communicate with the international maritime headquarters—and dialed a number he had saved three years ago.
The phone rang twice.
"Gabriel?" a smooth, refined voice answered. "It’s late in Mexico. Is everything alright with your arrival?"
"Mr. Sterling," Gabriel said, his voice cold as winter ice. "I need the best financial forensic team and the most ruthless corporate lawyer in Jalisco. And I need them in my hotel room by six o'clock tomorrow morning."
On the other end of the line, Arthur Sterling—the chief legal counsel for the billionaire owner of the international cruise line Gabriel worked for—paused.

"Who are we destroying, Gabriel?" Sterling asked calmly.
"My brother," Gabriel replied.
