Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Six months after the trial, the auction of Roberto's liquidated assets was officially finalized by the state bankruptcy court.
With the twenty million pesos in court-ordered restitution, combined with Gabriel’s substantial savings and a massive investment loan backed by his maritime firm, Gabriel made a monumental decision.
He bought a breathtaking ten-acre avocado and fruit orchard in the valley of Tapalpa, nestled in the cool pine-covered mountains of Jalisco.
In the center of the orchard, where fresh mountain streams flowed and wild flowers bloomed, Gabriel personally oversaw the construction of a new home.
It wasn't a pretentious, cold marble mansion like the one Roberto had built in Zapopan. It was a beautiful, sprawling single-story ranch house built with warm cedar wood, broad stone fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and a massive wrap-around porch overlooking the green valley.
Gabriel officially resigned from his chief engineering position at sea. His company, desperate not to lose his technical genius, offered him a remote executive position as Chief Fleet Consultant—allowing him to work from home four days a week with an even higher salary.
On a bright, sunny Saturday morning, the final furniture van drove away, leaving the ranch quiet and serene.
Gabriel stood on the wooden porch, holding two warm cups of fresh coffee.
Valeria walked out from the living room, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek against his back. She smelled of wild lavender and warm vanilla.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" she asked softly.
Gabriel set the coffee cups on the wooden railing, turning around to take her in his arms, pulling her close.
"I was thinking about the three years I spent on that ship," Gabriel murmured, kissing her forehead. "I used to sit on the steel deck at night, looking at the dark ocean, terrified that I would never be able to give you the peace you deserved."
May you like
Valeria looked up into his eyes, her heart swelling with deep, unshakeable love.
"Look around you, Gabriel," she whispered, gesturing toward the green mountains, the blooming fruit trees, and the warm, golden light reflecting off the house windows. "You didn't just give us peace. You gave us home."
