Chapter 13 - WHISPERS IN THE DARK

By dawn, the valley was shrouded in a thick, eerie fog. Logan didn't waste a second. He knew the cartel's tactical doctrine: they would cut communications, isolate the town, and strike under the cover of darkness or heavy weather.

He took Nora to the basement of the cabin, opening a hidden steel door behind a wall of stacked firewood. Inside was an armory—weapons, tactical gear, night-vision equipment, and encrypted radios that Logan had cached away as a contingency plan.

"I thought you were done with this life," Nora said softly, watching him check the action of an suppressed assault rifle.

"I was," Logan said, pausing to look at her. "I wanted to leave all of this in the dirt. But peace isn't something you just find, Nora. Sometimes it's something you have to defend with iron and blood."

Nora took his hand, squeezing it tight. "I'm not leaving you. I know how to shoot, and I know these mountains better than anyone. You're not fighting alone."

Logan felt a surge of pride and profound love. Unlike Victoria, who used men as disposable shields, Nora was ready to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him in the fire.

Suddenly, the power in the cabin cut out. The hum of the refrigerator died, and the lights extinguished, plunging the house into gray morning twilight.

Logan's radio chirped with static. Old Man Miller's panicked voice came through: "Logan! Come in! There are armed men in black SUVs blocking the main highway out of town. They've cut the phone lines!"

"Miller, gather the townspeople at the community center," Logan commanded into the radio. "Lock the doors, draw the blinds, and stay down. Don't engage them. I'm on my way."

He turned to Victoria, who was cowering in the corner. "You stay here. If you try to cross me, or if you harm Nora, there won't be a cartel left to kill you—I'll do it myself."

Logan threw on a dark tactical jacket, grabbed his gear, and handed Nora a compact shotgun. "We move through the woods. We take out their perimeter before they realize I know they're here."
