Chapter 19 - HEALING THE WOUNDS

Six months later.

The scars of that rainy night were gone. The cabin had been completely rebuilt, bigger and stronger than before, with a broad wrap-around porch made of local cedar. The valley was peaceful once again, the dark clouds of the past permanently cleared away.

The town of Paradise Ridge had rallied around Logan and Nora. Old Man Miller had personally led a crew of locals to help rebuild the mechanic shop and the cabin. Logan was no longer seen as a mysterious outsider; he was the hero of the valley, a man who had put his life on the line to protect their small community.

Logan stood in his shop, wiping down the shiny red fender of his restored 1974 Chevy pickup. His hands were greasy, his body healed, and his mind finally at complete peace.

Nora walked into the shop, wearing a simple sundress, her face glowing with a radiant beauty that took Logan's breath away every single time he saw her.

"You're working late, Mr. Mechanic," she teased, leaning against the workbench.

"Just finishing up," Logan smiled, setting his rag down and walking over to her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close. "Old man Miller's tractor needs an oil change tomorrow, but that can wait."

Nora looked up into his eyes, her expression turning sweet and gentle. "I have something for you."

She handed him a small, wooden box tied with a white ribbon.

Logan looked at her quizzically before untying the ribbon and opening the lid. Inside was a tiny pair of leather baby boots, no bigger than the palm of his hand.

Logan froze. His heart stopped, then began to hammer wildly in his chest. He looked from the tiny boots up to Nora’s glowing face. Her eyes were filled with tears of pure joy.

"Nora..." his voice choked up, a rare crack in his iron composure. "Are you...?"

"We're going to have a family, Logan," she whispered softly. "A real family. Right here."

Logan pulled her into a tight, fierce embrace, lifting her slightly off her feet. For a man who had lost everything in the shadows of his past, he had now been given the greatest gift in the universe.
