Chapter 17 - BLOOD AND IRON

The battle inside the cabin was brutal and unforgiving. Bullets tore through the wooden walls, shattering glass and destroying the furniture Logan had painstakingly restored.

Two remaining mercenaries rushed into the living room to flank Logan. Logan rolled out from behind the table, firing two rounds into the first man's chest. The second mercenary tackled Logan, knocking his rifle from his hands.

The two men crashed onto the wooden floor. The mercenary pulled a tactical dagger, pressing it down toward Logan's throat. Logan strained against the blade, his iron strength pushing back, but the man had the leverage.

Suddenly, a loud shot echoed through the room. The mercenary froze, his eyes wide, before slumping sideways.

Behind him stood Victoria, holding a discarded pistol, her hands shaking violently. For once in her life, she had done something selfish that actually helped him.

"We're even!" she gasped.

"Not quite," Logan grunted, standing up and picking up his rifle.

From the shadows near the fireplace, Raskov emerged, holding a fragmentation grenade with the pin pulled.

"If I die, we all burn!" Raskov sneered maniacally.

Before Raskov could throw the grenade, the heavy back door blew open. Nora stepped into the room, holding her shotgun. Without hesitation, she fired a heavy slug straight into Raskov's shoulder.

The impact knocked the giant back. The unpinned grenade slipped from his hand, rolling toward the basement entrance.

"Get down!" Logan yelled, tackling Nora and Victoria to the floor behind the heavy stone kitchen island.

BOOM!

The explosion shook the cabin to its foundations, blowing out the remaining windows and sending a cloud of dust and debris everywhere. Silence fell over the house, broken only by the sound of heavy rain pouring through the shattered roof.

Logan pulled himself up from the debris. Raskov was dead near the basement stairs. The mercenary threat had been completely annihilated.

Logan looked at Nora. She was covered in drywall dust, but her eyes were shining, alive and safe. He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly.

"Are you okay?" he whispered.

"I am now," she whispered back, resting her face against his chest.
