Chapter 16 - INTO THE LION’S DEN

Logan raced back toward his cabin using the old logging trails in his restored 1974 Chevy pickup. The engine roared like a wild beast as he tore through the mud and gravel. Beside him, Nora reloaded her rifle with practiced ease.
"They think Victoria is the prize," Logan said, stomping on the accelerator. "The cartel leader, Viktor Raskov, will be leading the assault personally. He wants her dead to secure his control over Sterling Global."
"What about Victoria?" Nora asked. "Is she worth risking everything for?"
"No," Logan said truthfully. "She isn't. But my home is. You are."
They arrived at the perimeter of the cabin grounds just as night fell. The house was surrounded by at least a dozen heavily armed men. Tactical spotlights illuminated the front porch—the very porch where Logan and Nora had shared peaceful mornings. Seeing his sanctuary violated filled Logan with a cold, unstoppable rage.
A thick mountain thunderstorm broke overhead, heavy rain pouring down and thunder rattling the valley.
"Nora, cut their power generators near the shed," Logan ordered, his voice dark. "When the lights go out, I'm going in."
Nora nodded, slipping into the dark, rainy woods. Moments later, the heavy buzz of the diesel generators sputtered and died, plunging the cabin compound into total darkness, broken only by flashes of lightning.
Logan moved in under the cover of thunder.
He eliminated two mercenaries near the porch using close-quarters combat, taking their automatic weapons. Flashes of lightning revealed his silhouette as he breached the front door of his own home.
Inside, Viktor Raskov—a massive Russian man with a scarred face—was dragging Victoria by her hair down the stairs.
"Logan!" Victoria screamed upon seeing him. "Save me!"
Raskov turned, dropping Victoria, and drew a heavy caliber pistol. "Ah, the legendary Logan. The ghost of Chicago. You should have stayed dead, my friend."
"You broke into my house," Logan said, stepping into the living room, water dripping from his coat. "You ruined my peace."

"I am taking what belongs to the Syndicate!" Raskov roared, firing three rapid shots.
Logan dived behind the heavy oak dining table as bullets splintered the wood. He returned fire, forcing Raskov to take cover behind the stone fireplace.
