Chapter 8 - The Falling Cage

Vance froze, his eyes widening to the size of silver dollars as he recognized my voice. He looked through the red gloom, staring at the fully kitted, terrifying black figure standing in the center of his warehouse.
"Logan?!" he stammered, his hand shaking so violently he almost dropped his revolver. "No... no way. You're a mechanic! You're a nobody!"
"You should have checked my service record, Dominic," I said, my voice dead calm. "But you were too busy checking my oil."
Before he could pull the trigger, the glass ceiling of the warehouse completely shattered as tactical ropes dropped down from the sky. FBI Hostage Rescue agents poured through the roof, while NCIS teams breached the side doors, their weapon-mounted lights cutting through the darkness like laser beams.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Get on the ground! Now!"
The remaining guards and workers threw their hands in the air, collapsing to the floor in abject terror. But Vance didn't surrender. He spun on his heel, grabbing Amelia by the arm as she tried to crawl out of the office door, and dragged her in front of him like a human shield.
"Stay back!" Vance shrieked, pressing the barrel of his gun against Amelia’s temple. She was weeping hysterically, her expensive silk dress torn and covered in drywall dust, her eyes wild with a sudden, horrifying realization of who her husband actually was. "I’ll blow her head off! I swear to God, I’ll kill her! Let me get to my truck or she dies!"
The FBI agents halted, their rifles locked onto Vance, waiting for a command.
Colonel Brooks stepped through the breached front doors, flanked by two heavily armed Marines. He looked at me, then up at Vance.
"Master Chief," Brooks said quietly over the tactical radio channel. "It's your theater. You take the shot."
I lowered my rifle slightly. I didn't need the optics. At twenty yards, a Tier-1 shooter doesn't miss. I slowly transitioned to my sidearm, pulling the Sig Sauer P226 from my waist.
Amelia looked down from the balcony, her tear-stained face locking onto mine. "Logan! Please! Please save me! I didn't know! I swear I didn't know what he was doing! I love you, Logan! Please!"
The lie was so pathetic it didn't even register as an emotion in my chest.
"You never loved Logan the mechanic, Amelia," I said, my voice echoing through the silent warehouse. "And you definitely aren't going to like Logan the SEAL."
Vance adjusted his grip on her, his shoulder shifting just two inches to the left—the exact same poor posture and unbalanced weight I had noted in the napkin holder at the diner. He exposed a tiny sliver of his right forehead behind her hair.
