Chapter 5 - The Discovery of the Hidden Vault

With Daniel removed from the office, I took over the daily operations of Vance Enterprises. Walking back into the executive suite felt strange, but my mind was sharp. I had managed the books for twenty years before my husband died; the numbers were a language I spoke fluently.

While reviewing the physical archives in the basement vault—records Daniel assumed I would never look at—I discovered a locked metal file cabinet that wasn't registered in the company asset inventory.

I called a professional technician to drill the lock. When the heavy drawer slid open, it revealed a hidden ledger and a stack of property deeds.

Daniel hadn't just been siphoning money to Vanessa's shell company. For three years, he had been deliberately underreporting the royalties from our primary European patents. He had redirected over two million dollars into a private offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands under a corporate entity called DV Holdings.

But the real shocker was the stack of deeds at the bottom of the drawer. Daniel had used the stolen patent funds to quietly purchase three commercial strip malls in the neighboring county, listing Vanessa’s father as the primary trustee.

They weren't just planning to move to California; they had already built a secondary financial empire using my husband's life's work as the foundation.

"This is criminal fraud on a massive scale, Evelyn," Ruth said, examining the offshore routing numbers. "This crosses the line from a civil corporate dispute to grand larceny and tax evasion. The state prosecutor will have no choice but to file formal indictments."

I held the deeds in my hand, remembering how Daniel had stood by my refrigerator, smirking while Vanessa told me everyone avoided my food. He had looked at me as an obstacle, a simple old woman to be fleeced and forgotten.

"Call the district attorney, Ruth," I said, my voice dead calm. "Let’s give Daniel the dramatic Easter conclusion he was so worried about."
