Chapter 6 - The Broken AllianceThe pressure proved to be too much for the house of cards Daniel and Vanessa had built. With the mortgage on their luxury penthouse in foreclosure and the threat of federal indictments hanging over their heads, the cracks in their marriage turned into an abyss.

On Friday afternoon, my security detail alerted me that Daniel was at the front gate alone, begging to see me. He didn't have a car; he had taken a taxi, and he looked entirely broken.

I allowed him onto the property, meeting him on the veranda. He sat on the wicker chair, his head in his hands, weeping openly.

"She took everything, Mom," Daniel sobbed, his voice shaking. "The moment the bank froze the Park Avenue apartment, Vanessa cleared out our personal joint account—there was about eighty thousand dollars left in there—and drove to her parents' house. She filed for divorce this morning. She’s trying to blame the entire offshore scheme on me. She told the lawyers she had no idea where the money for V-Style Innovations came from."

I sat across from him, pouring myself a cup of tea. I didn't offer him any.

"She was always a scorpion, Daniel," I said softly. "You just thought you were the one holding the jar."

"Mom, please help me," he begged, reaching across the table to grab my hand. I pulled my hand back before he could touch it. "The district attorney’s office called my lawyer. They’re talking about jail time. I can't go to prison, Mom. If you tell the DA that you authorized those transfers as a family gift, the charges will drop. I'll pay it all back, I swear! I’ll work for you for free for the rest of my life!"

I looked at my son, searching his face for any genuine remorse, any shred of the boy I had raised. All I saw was a cornered animal trying to escape the consequences of his own greed.

"I cannot lie to a federal prosecutor, Daniel," I told him, my voice devoid of anger, filled only with a profound, final sorrow. "You made your choice in my kitchen on Easter Sunday. You stood by while your wife insulted my life, my home, and your father’s memory, all while you held the deeds to stolen properties in your pocket. You wanted to see me broken. Now, you must learn what happens when you have to stand on your own feet."
