Chapter 7 - The Trial of Vance vs. Vance

The local courthouse was packed for the preliminary hearing of the State vs. Daniel Vance and Vanessa Vance. The co-defendants sat at opposite sides of the defense table, refusing to look at each other. Vanessa was flanked by a high-priced criminal attorney her father had funded, while Daniel sat with a public defender, his funds completely exhausted.

I took the witness stand as the prosecution’s primary witness. The courtroom was completely silent as I laid out the digital records, the hidden vault ledgers, and the forensic trail of the two million dollars in stolen patent royalties.

Vanessa’s attorney attempted to cross-examine me, his tone aggressive and sharp. "Mrs. Vance, isn't it true that you are simply a vindictive mother who is angry that your son chose his wife over you? Isn't this entire prosecution an act of domestic revenge over a simple kitchen argument?"

I looked directly at the jury, then at the defense attorney. "An argument in a kitchen does not create a fraudulent offshore account in the Cayman Islands, sir. An act of maternal anger does not forge patent royalty receipts or quietly purchase commercial properties under a hidden trustee. I am not here because my son hurt my feelings. I am here because he stole the intellectual property of a dead man and used it to fund a criminal conspiracy with his wife."

The prosecution then entered the leather-bound planner we had recovered from the guest wing into evidence—the one detailing Project Legacy Realignment and the plan to declare me incompetent.

When the prosecutor read the entries aloud, a collective gasp ran through the courtroom. Vanessa buried her face in her hands, while her father looked out the window, realizing their defense was entirely annihilated.

The judge didn't even hesitate. The evidence was so overwhelming that both defendants were ordered to stand trial without the possibility of a dismissed indictment.
