Chapter 8 - The Falling Dominos

With the criminal trial looming, Vanessa’s defense completely collapsed. Her father, realizing that his own involvement as the trustee for the commercial strip malls made him an accessory to grand larceny, struck a deal with the state prosecutor. He agreed to forfeit all three properties to Vance Enterprises in exchange for total immunity for himself and his daughter.
But Vanessa wasn't off the hook for the siphoned corporate funds. The judge ordered an immediate summary judgment against her for the four hundred and fifty thousand dollars she had received through V-Style Innovations.
Daniel, facing the brunt of the grand larceny charges due to his signature being on every fraudulent document, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and tax evasion.
On the day of sentencing, I sat in the front row of the gallery.
Daniel was sentenced to five years in a minimum-security federal facility, with an order for full restitution to Vance Enterprises. Vanessa was sentenced to two years of probation, three hundred hours of community service, and was declared legally bankrupt after her personal assets were liquidated to satisfy the corporate judgment.
As Daniel was led away in handcuffs, he stopped in the aisle and looked at me. His face was hollow, his eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry, Mom," he whispered.

"I know you are, Daniel," I said quietly. "I just wish you had been sorry before you got caught."
Vanessa walked out of the courtroom alone, her head down, ignored by the very photographers and society columnists she had spent years trying to cultivate. She was broke, discredited, and entirely erased from the family she had tried to usurp.
