Chapter 3 - The Hospital Syndicate

The rain had turned into a torrential downpour by the time our three armored SUVs pulled up to the rear service entrance of the St. Helena Private Hospital. The once-glistening facade of the prestigious medical institution now looked like a mausoleum under the flickering neon streetlights.

Marcus unlocked his sidearm, checking the chamber before holstering it beneath his dark coat. "Federal agents are raiding the main administrative wing as we speak, Julian. But the basement archives—where the off-grid patient files are kept—are secured by private security contractors hired by Pendelton's shell firm."

"We go in, retrieve the original birth records, and clear out before the state police lock down the perimeter," I commanded, pulling my collar up. "I want every scrap of paper that proves how many other children were stolen."

We moved through the dark, sterile corridors of the sub-basement. The air smelled strongly of bleach and damp concrete. My heart hammered against my ribs with every step, the memory of my son's tiny face etched into my mind. I was no longer just a grieving father or a betrayed businessman; I was a man executing a war.

We reached a heavy reinforced steel door marked Archive Room B. Marcus pulled out an electronic keycard stolen from Dr. Vance's private office and swiped it. The light turned green with a low click.

Inside, rows of floor-to-ceiling filing cabinets stretched into the shadows. Sitting at a center desk was a man in a tactical vest, rapidly shuffing documents into an industrial shredder.

"Stop right there!" Marcus shouted, raising his weapon.

The guard didn't hesitate. He pulled a suppressed pistol from his belt and fired two rounds into the wall beside us. Marcus returned fire instantly, hitting the guard in the shoulder. The man dropped to the floor, grunting in pain as his weapon clattered across the linoleum.

I rushed forward, kicking the gun away, and grabbed the man by his tactical vest, slamming him against the shredder. "Where are the birth registries for October 2026?!" I barked.

"Go to hell, Moretti," the guard spat through bloodied teeth.

Marcus stepped up, pressing the barrel of his gun against the man's knee. "He won't ask twice. And unlike the police, he has nothing left to lose."

The guard panicked, his eyes darting toward a locked fireproof safe in the corner of the room. "The keycode... it's 10-14-14! The date Julianna Mercer died! Everything is in there! The ledgers, the foreign transfer receipts, the real delivery logs!"

I threw the guard aside. Marcus entered the code into the digital keypad of the safe. It hummed and swung open, revealing thick leather-bound binders and dozens of encrypted hard drives.

I pulled out the binder marked 2026 - Quarter 3.

I flipped through the pages until I found the entry for August 7th. There, in Dr. Vance's precise handwriting, was the truth:

Patient: Charlotte Mercer (alias Valentina Rossi).

Infant: Male, Healthy, 7 lbs 4 oz.

Status: Declared Deceased (Falsified).

Destination: Client 409 - Zurich, Switzerland.

Transfer Fee: $5,000,000.

My hands shook with rage. "They weren't just taking my company. They were selling my son to an offshore client for five million dollars. He was just a line item on a ledger."

"Julian, look at this," Marcus said, pulling a smaller black notebook from the bottom shelf. "This isn't just about St. Helena. This syndicate involves three other private clinics in Europe and two major shareholders on the Moretti Group Board of Directors."

"Who?" I demanded.

"Victor Sterling and Harrison Vance—Dr. Vance's older brother."

The puzzle was complete. Victor Sterling was my father's former partner, the man who had voted against me in every strategic board meeting for the past three years. He had been feeding internal financial data to Matteo and Charlotte, orchestrating the slow drain of the company's assets while waiting for the perfect moment to oust me.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights in the corridor began to flash, accompanied by a deafening siren.

"Federal agents! Clear the building!" a loudspeaker echoed from above.

"We have to go, Julian," Marcus urged, sweeping the hard drives and binders into a heavy leather bag. "The FBI is securing the building. If we get caught here with this evidence, it will be tied up in chain-of-custody disputes for months."

We slipped out through the loading dock, vanishing into the storm just as armored federal vehicles surrounded the front gates of St. Helena.

Back in the command vehicle, I opened my laptop and connected the newly acquired hard drives. I initiated a direct, encrypted broadcast to every member of the Moretti Group Board of Directors, as well as the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Marcus," I said quietly, watching the progress bar upload the files. "Call Detective Ramirez. Tell her to prepare arrest warrants for Victor Sterling and Harrison Vance."

"And what about your wife and brother?" Marcus asked.

"They are sitting in jail thinking they still have leverage," I said, staring at the screen as the evidence of their crimes was distributed worldwide. "Tomorrow morning, I am going to pay them a visit. And I am going to show them what happens when you try to tear down a father."
