Chapter 8 - The Cornered Predators

With Charlotte dead and the syndicate dismantled, only one loose end remained: my brother, Matteo.
While Charlotte had taken the path of suicidal rage, Matteo had taken the path of a coward. Using forged diplomatic papers provided by a corrupt consulate official, he had managed to post bail under an alias and fled the state, hiding out in an abandoned industrial complex near the old shipping docks where our father had started his business thirty years ago.
Marcus and I sat in a tactical command vehicle parked two blocks away from the docks. Federal SWAT teams and local police units had surrounded the four-block radius.
"Thermal imaging shows three individuals inside the main warehouse," Marcus reported, pointing to a blue screen displaying heat signatures. "Matteo and two hired mercenaries. They are heavily armed and preparing to board a cargo boat docked at Pier 14."
"He’s trying to escape to South America," I said, staring at the flashing red dot representing my brother. "He knows if he gets into international waters, extradition will take years."
"Special Prosecutor Rostova wants SWAT to breach," Marcus said. "But the risk of a prolonged firefight is high."
"No," I said, opening the door of the vehicle. "I'm going in."
"Julian, no!" Marcus warned, grabbing my arm. "He's desperate! He has nothing left to lose!"
"He is my brother, Marcus," I said softly, looking him in the eye. "This started between us. It ends between us."
I put on a bulletproof vest, checked my weapon, and walked down the rain-slicked alleyway toward the warehouse.
The heavy sliding doors of Pier 14 were half-open, creaking loudly in the ocean breeze. Inside, the warehouse was dark, filled with rusting shipping containers and stacked wooden crates.
I stepped inside, my boots echoing against the concrete. "Matteo!" I called out, my voice booming through the cavernous space.
A sudden silence fell over the warehouse, broken only by the sound of waves crashing against the wooden pilings outside.
"Julian?" Matteo's voice echoed from behind a stack of containers, trembling and high-pitched. "Is that you?!"
"It's over, Matteo!" I shouted, walking slowly down the central aisle. "The docks are surrounded! SWAT has the perimeter locked down! There is no boat coming for you!"
A shadowy figure stepped out from behind a container thirty yards away. Matteo was holding an assault rifle, his hands shaking so violently the barrel wobbled in the air. He was thin, pale, his clothes dirty and disheveled.
"You brought the cops?!" he sobbed, tears cutting streaks through the dirt on his face. "You brought them to kill me?!"
"I brought them to end this!" I said, stopping twenty paces away from him. "Drop the weapon, Matteo! Stand down!"
"You took everything from me!" he shrieked, aiming the rifle at me. "Dad loved you more! He gave you the business! He gave you the name! And when I tried to take what was mine, you turned everyone against me!"
"Dad gave me the business because you were weak!" I yelled back, stepping closer despite the gun pointed at my chest. "Because you cared about money, not people! You let Charlotte manipulate you! You let Dr. Vance throw my son into the trash!"
"I didn't know she was going to throw him away!" Matteo wept, breaking down into hysterical sobs. "She told me the baby would be adopted by a rich family in Switzerland! She lied to me, Julian! She lied to me about everything!"
"Then stop lying to yourself!" I said, holding out my hand. "Drop the gun, Matteo. Don't die here in the dirt like Charlotte."
Matteo looked at me, then at the gun in his hands, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The two mercenaries behind him, seeing that the situation was hopeless and hearing the approaching sirens of the SWAT teams, dropped their weapons and raised their hands in surrender.
Matteo slowly lowered his rifle, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "I just wanted to be like you, Julian," he whispered, tears streaming down his face. "I just wanted you to respect me."
"I would have given you half the world if you had just been a brother," I said softly.
Matteo dropped the rifle to the floor. It clattered against the concrete.

Special forces flooded into the warehouse a second later, tackling Matteo to the ground and securing the mercenaries.
As they dragged my brother away in handcuffs, he didn't fight. He just stared at me with empty, hollow eyes—a man who had lost his soul to greed, now left with nothing but the echoes of his own ruin.
