Chapter 7 - The Hunt for the Truth

The storm outside raged as if the elements themselves were mirror images of the chaos threatening my life. Inside the Aspen fortress, security was doubled. Infrared sensors lined the perimeter fence, armed guards patrolled every entrance, and my private security detail remained on code-red alert.
I sat in the nursery, holding Leo in my lap as he peacefully drank his bottle. Despite the madness outside, his little face was calm, his tiny fingers clutching my thumb.
Marcus entered silently, closing the door behind him. "We tracked the transport vehicle that Charlotte escaped from. The guards were incapacitated with a nerve agent introduced into their ventilation system. It was an inside job, Julian."
"Who helped her?" I asked without looking up from my son.
"We ran a background check on all domestic staff hired at your estate over the past six years," Marcus said, placing a tablet on the table. "One of your senior security officers—David Vance. Dr. Vance's illegitimate son."
I looked up slowly, my eyes narrowing. "David? He’s been guarding the main gate for three years."
"He turned off the outer security cameras five minutes ago," Marcus said grimly. "Julian, she’s already inside the estate perimeter."
Before I could react, the power cut out completely.
The lights shattered into darkness, replaced instantly by the dull red glow of the emergency backup generators. The blaring alarm sounded throughout the house.
"Secure the room!" I shouted, standing up and handing Leo to Mrs. Gable, who rushed into the reinforced panic room built into the back of the nursery closet. "Maria, lock this door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus!"
"Be careful, Mr. Moretti!" Maria cried, pulling Sophia in with her and sealing the heavy steel door.
Marcus pulled his firearm, clicking off the safety. "I'll take the lower hall. You stay here."
"No," I said, pulling a hidden weapon from under the nursery desk. "She’s coming for me. Leave the upper floor to me."
I moved through the dim, red-lit corridor of the estate, my footsteps silent against the carpet. The sound of rain pounding against the roof echoed like gunfire.
As I reached the grand staircase, I saw a dark figure standing near the balcony railings.
She was dressed in black tactical gear, her hair pulled back tightly, holding a suppressed pistol in her hand. The blood on her sleeve showed she had been wounded during her escape, but her eyes burned with a terrifying, unhinged intensity.
"Charlotte," I said softly, stepping out into the open hallway.
She spun around, aiming her weapon directly at my chest. A wild, mocking smile spread across her pale face. "Julian! Did you really think a few federal marshals and iron bars could hold me?"
"You're bleeding out, Charlotte," I said calmly, keeping my weapon lowered at my side. "It's over. The police are ten minutes away. The entire estate is surrounded."
"I don't care about the police!" she screamed, her voice cracking with madness. "You ruined everything! My sister's legacy, my fortune, my life! You took it all from me!"
"You ruined yourself!" I shouted back, taking a slow step forward. "You stole a child! You threw him into the garbage! You are a monster, Charlotte!"
"He was my ticket to billions!" she shrieked, her hand trembling on the trigger. "If I can't have the Moretti empire, you won't have your precious son! Where is he?! Where is the boy?!"
"You'll never touch him again," I said coldly.
She raised the gun to shoot.
BANG!
A shot echoed through the hallway. But it didn't come from her weapon.
Charlotte gasped, her eyes widening in shock as a red spot bloomed across her chest. She stumbled backward against the balcony railing, looking down at her shirt in disbelief.
Behind her stood Marcus, his weapon smoking.
Charlotte let out a choking cough, looking at me one last time with a mixture of hatred and shock, before her knees gave out and she collapsed onto the polished hardwood floor.
I rushed forward, kicking her weapon away. She lay there, her breath rattling in her chest, staring up at the grand chandelier above.
"It... was... all... mine..." she whispered faintly, her voice fading into nothingness.
Then, her eyes went blank.
May you like
Marcus stepped up beside me, checking her pulse, then slowly lowered his arm. "She's gone, Julian."
I stood there in the quiet red glow of the emergency lights, listening to the rain outside. The nightmare that had plagued my family for months was finally coming to an end.
