Chapter 5 - Alliances in the Shadows

The mountain retreat in Aspen was built like a fortress. Surrounded by high stone walls, private security checkpoints, and state-of-the-art surveillance, it was the safest place on earth for my son.
I stood by the large stone fireplace in the main hall, holding three-week-old Leo in my arms. He was growing stronger every day, his small hand wrapped firmly around my pinky finger. Mrs. Gable stood nearby, folding a stack of soft woolen baby blankets, while Sophia sat on the thick rug, playing with a wooden train set.
"He looks more like you every day, Mr. Moretti," Mrs. Gable said warmly, smiling at Leo.
"He has my father's eyes," I murmured, kissing the top of his head. "And thanks to you two, he has a future."
"Mr. Moretti," Mrs. Gable hesitated, her eyes filling with tears. "We can never thank you enough for bringing us here. But... are we safe? The news says those men had connections everywhere."
"You are safe here, Maria," I said firmly. "My legal team has officially granted you full legal guardianship protection under the Moretti trust. Sophia's education, your pension, your housing—everything is secured. You are family now."
Sophia looked up from her toys, her big brown eyes shining. "Is baby Leo going to stay here forever, Mr. Moretti?"
"For a little while, sweetheart," I smiled down at her. "Until I finish cleaning up the mess outside."
Marcus walked into the room, holding an encrypted satellite phone. His face was tense. "Julian. We have a problem."
I handed Leo carefully to Mrs. Gable and stepped into the private study with Marcus. "What is it?"
"It's about Charlotte's lawyer, Richard Sterling—Victor Sterling's brother," Marcus said, pulling up a file on his tablet. "He just filed an emergency motion with the State Supreme Court. They are attempting to invoke a legacy clause in your father's original trust document."
"What legacy clause?"
"A clause stating that if the primary heir—you—is deemed psychologically unstable or involved in criminal proceedings, management of the company reverts to a court-appointed custodian," Marcus explained. "They are claiming that the trauma of the 'fake death' and the subsequent corporate turmoil has rendered you unfit to run the Moretti Group or maintain sole custody of Leo."
I let out a bitter laugh. "Unfit? They orchestrated the crime, and now they are using the trauma of their crime to take my son and my company?!"
"They hired a corrupt forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Aris Thorne," Marcus continued. "He’s scheduled to give expert testimony in a closed-door hearing in three days. If the judge grants the temporary injunction, state child protective services will be forced to take Leo into temporary custody until the trial concludes."
My blood ran cold. The thought of my son being taken away by government agents—where Sterling's men could easily reach him—was unacceptable.
"They think they can play dirty in a courtroom," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Who is presiding over the hearing?"
"Judge Evelyn Vance."
"Dr. Vance's cousin," I realized instantly. "The syndicate's reach goes all the way into the judiciary."
"We can't win this in their court, Julian," Marcus warned. "The deck is stacked."
"Then we don't play in their court," I said, stepping toward the window and looking out at the snow-covered pines. "We create our own courtroom. Marcus, contact Special Prosecutor Elena Rostova. She’s been investigating judicial corruption in the state for five years."
"Rostova won't work with private citizens, Julian. She's a purist."
"She will work with me when I give her the master ledger from St. Helena's safe," I said coldly. "The ledger that contains the names of twelve sitting judges, four state senators, and two federal prosecutors who took bribes from the syndicate."
May you like
Marcus stared at me in awe. "You had that ledger all along?"
"I kept it as an insurance policy," I replied. "It's time to cash it in. We aren't just defending Leo, Marcus. We are going to burn this entire corrupt system to the ground."
