Chapter 6 - The Trial of Betrayal

The emergency hearing was held in a private, high-security courtroom on the top floor of the State District Courthouse. The blinds were drawn, and the air was thick with tension.
Judge Evelyn Vance sat behind the bench, her expression stern and unreadable. On the plaintiff’s side sat Richard Sterling, looking sleek and confident in a bespoke suit, accompanied by Dr. Aris Thorne, who held a thick folder of falsified psychiatric evaluations.
I sat on the defense side with my new lead counsel, Sarah Jenkins—a brilliant, fierce attorney known for dismantling corporate cartels. Leo was safely hidden at a secure location under federal protection.
"This court is now in session," Judge Vance declared, her gavel striking the sound block with a sharp ring. "We are here to hear the emergency petition regarding the corporate stewardship of the Moretti Group and the temporary guardianship of the minor child, Leo Moretti."
Richard Sterling stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, the evidence we have submitted clearly shows that Mr. Julian Moretti has experienced severe psychological trauma following the recent events. His erratic behavior—including hiring private armed mercenaries and launching unauthorized raids—demonstrates a complete loss of emotional stability. We request that control of the estate be temporarily transferred to an independent custodian, and the child be placed in state protective care."
"Mr. Sterling," Sarah Jenkins rose to her feet, her voice cutting through the room like a blade. "My client has suffered an unprecedented act of criminal conspiracy orchestrated by the very individuals Mr. Sterling represents. To claim he is unfit because he protected his newborn son from human traffickers is not only absurd—it is malicious."
"Order!" Judge Vance barked, glaring at Sarah. "Dr. Thorne's psychological evaluation carries significant weight in this court, Ms. Jenkins. I am inclined to grant the temporary custody injunction pending a full evaluation."
A smug smile played on Richard Sterling's lips. He thought he had won.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom slammed open.
Two federal marshals stepped inside, followed by Special Prosecutor Elena Rostova. She was wearing a sharp grey suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase, her eyes cold as flint.
Judge Vance’s face paled visible. "Prosecutor Rostova? What is the meaning of this interruption? This is a closed hearing."
"Not anymore, Your Honor," Rostova said, her heels clicking loudly on the marble floor as she walked down the center aisle. "I am executing a federal arrest warrant issued by the United States District Court."
Richard Sterling stood up in panic. "A warrant for who?!"
"For Judge Evelyn Vance, Attorney Richard Sterling, and Dr. Aris Thorne," Rostova declared calmly.
A collective gasp echoed through the small room.
"This is outrage!" Judge Vance shouted, standing up from her bench. "You have no jurisdiction here!"
"I have full jurisdiction under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act," Rostova replied, reaching into her briefcase and pulling out a stack of documents. "Ten minutes ago, the Federal Grand Jury indicted all three of you for conspiracy to commit human trafficking, judicial bribery, and obstruction of justice."
Rostova held up a thick leather binder—the master ledger from St. Helena Hospital.
"We have verified financial wire transfers totaling over twelve million dollars sent from off-shore shell accounts controlled by Matteo Moretti and Charlotte Mercer into private accounts held by Judge Vance and Dr. Thorne," Rostova announced. "Furthermore, we have recorded wiretaps of Mr. Sterling organizing the destruction of medical evidence."
"That's a lie!" Sterling shrieked, backing away toward the wall. "That evidence was stolen!"
"It was surrendered voluntarily by a patriotic citizen," Rostova said, turning her head to nod at me.
Federal marshals stepped forward, pulling out handcuffs. Within minutes, Judge Vance was stripped of her robes, and Sterling and Thorne were forced to their knees, their hands bound behind their backs.
As Sterling was led past my table, he glared at me with pure venom. "You destroyed us, Moretti! You destroyed everything!"
I stood up, stepping closer to him, my voice low and unwavering. "You destroyed yourselves the moment you decided my family was a target. Take them away."
Rostova walked over to my desk, extending her hand. "Mr. Moretti. The federal judge has officially dismissed all petitions against you. Your custody of Leo is absolute, and the Moretti Group is entirely under your command."
I shook her hand firmly. "Thank you, Prosecutor."
"Don't thank me yet," Rostova said quietly, leaning in so only I could hear. "Charlotte Mercer escaped custody forty minutes ago during her transport to the federal detention center. She had help from inside."

My blood turned to ice. "Where is she?"
"We don't know," Rostova admitted grimly. "But a woman with nothing left to lose is the most dangerous predator on earth. Protect your son, Julian."
