Chapter 12 - The Legal Battle Begins

By 8:00 AM the following morning, Joanna sat across from Sarah Vance, a sharp, fierce family law attorney whose reputation in Richmond was unmatched. The morning sun cast long shadows across Sarah’s mahogany desk, where a thick stack of legal papers sat waiting.

"He's playing aggressive dirty pool, Joanna," Sarah said, tapping a red pen against the document. "Derek’s legal team isn't just petitioning for custody. They’re filing a motion claiming you suffer from severe postpartum psychosis and emotional instability, citing your 'unexplained fall' as evidence of self-harm and neglect."

Linda, sitting in the armchair beside Joanna, gasped. "That monster! He pushed her! He locked her in the study for six hours before!"

"We know that, Mrs. Miller," Sarah said gently, looking over her glasses. "But in a court of law, without a criminal conviction—which was stymied because the local sheriff down in South Carolina was Derek's golf partner—it becomes a classic 'he said, she said.' And Derek has resources. Meredith’s family foundation is funding his legal team."

Joanna looked down at her hands. The simple silver band with two engraved stars caught the morning light. She refused to tremble. She was done trembling.

"What do we need to do, Sarah?" Joanna asked, her voice clear.

"We strike back not with emotion, but with surgical precision," Sarah replied. "Derek claims you're unstable. We undergo full psychological evaluations voluntarily to disprove it before they can force a court-appointed evaluator. Second, we need hard evidence of his coercive control and financial intimidation."

"Meredith kept all the records," Joanna remembered suddenly. "When Derek married me, his mother took over all our assets. Every trust fund, every bank account, even the deed to our old house was under Meredith’s name or her family's trust. She controlled the finances to keep me completely dependent."

"Financial abuse is a recognized form of domestic control," Sarah nodded, writing notes rapidly. "If Meredith misused trust funds or falsified records to cut you off or conceal assets during your marriage, we don't just defend against custody—we open a federal inquiry into their family trust."

"I have something else," Joanna added quietly. "Before I ran, I took a small USB drive from Derek’s home office desk. I thought it just had family photos... but there were encrypted folders labeled with names of other women. And financial transfers to offshore accounts."

Sarah stopped writing, looking up with sharp eyes. "Where is that drive?"

"Safe," Joanna said. "In my lockbox at the bank."

"Retrieve it today," Sarah instructed. "If Derek wants a war, we give him one he can't afford."
