Chapter 7 - The Interventions

While Meredith scrambled to hire a high-priced criminal defense attorney to keep herself out of prison, the psychological pillars of her controlled world began to rapidly disintegrate.

Derek cracked completely.

Left alone in the empty, freezing apartment without his mother’s daily guidance, and bombarded by legal summonses notifying him that his personal bank accounts had been frozen by court order, Derek suffered a complete mental breakdown.

On Friday morning, security at Mateo Vance’s downtown office called upstairs to report that Derek Villard was sitting in the public lobby, weeping uncontrollably, refusing to leave until he spoke to Joanna.

Mateo and Joanna went down to the lobby together.

Derek looked like a ghost. His hair was unwashed, his suit rumpled, and his eyes hollow and bloodshot. When he saw Joanna step out of the elevator, he staggered forward like a beaten dog, dropping to his knees on the marble floor right in front of her.

“Jo... please...” Derek sobbed, grabbing the hem of her maternity dress. “Please... you have to help me. Mom... Mom won't answer her phone. Her lawyers dropped her this morning. The bank wouldn't even let me buy a sandwich with my credit card... they said everything is frozen...”

Joanna looked down at her husband with a profound, aching mixture of pity and absolute detachment.

There was no anger left in her heart. Only the cold, clean emptiness of a door closing forever.

“You did this to yourself, Derek,” Joanna said quietly. “Your mother didn't just control you—she made you an accomplice to attempted murder. And you let her do it because it was easier than standing up and being a man.”

“I didn't know!” Derek cried, rocking back on his heels, tears streaming down his cheeks. “I swear to God, Jo, I didn't know she wanted you to die! She told me you were just exaggerating! She said you were trying to trap me!”

“She told you to let me die on the floor, Derek,” Joanna reminded him, her voice unshakable. “And you walked out of the bedroom and left me there. I heard you. I remember every single second of it.”

Derek buried his face in his hands, howling with grief and terror as he realized the full, irreversible extent of his betrayal.

Mateo signaled to two building security guards, who stepped forward and gently pulled Derek to his feet, guiding him away from the lobby toward the exit.

“He’s done,” Mateo murmured to Joanna as they watched Derek being led away. “His mother broke his mind, and now the legal system is going to break her empire. All that’s left is the final reckoning in court.”
