Chapter 13 - Shadows at the Gate

The weeks following the initial legal filings turned into a grueling game of psychological warfare. While Sarah worked with forensic IT experts to decrypt the drive, strange occurrences began haunting the Virginia property.
It started small. A black SUV idling at the end of the long dirt driveway at twilight, its headlights turning off the moment Joanna stepped onto the porch. Then came the phone calls—silent air breathing through the speaker at 3:00 AM.
One afternoon, while Linda took Maya and Lily to the local park, Joanna was in the garden cutting back dying rosebushes when she heard the distinct crunch of gravel behind her.
She turned around sharply, holding her pruning shears tightly.
Standing at the edge of the driveway, wearing an immaculate beige trench coat and dark sunglasses, was Meredith.
Derek’s mother looked like a portrait of old Southern aristocracy—impeccably groomed, cold, and utterly lacking in human warmth.
"You always did lack discipline, Joanna," Meredith said, her voice dripping with aristocratic condescension as she stepped closer. "Look at you. Digging in the dirt like a peasant, dragging my granddaughters into this dismal little town."
"You are trespassing, Meredith," Joanna said, standing tall, holding the shears firmly at her side. "Get off my property before I call the sheriff."
"The sheriff?" Meredith laughed softly, taking off her sunglasses to reveal icy blue eyes. "You think local deputies care about a girl from nowhere? You were nothing until my son gave you a name. You gave him two heirs, and for that, we gave you a life of luxury. But you proved defective. Ungrateful."
"I survived your son's violent temper," Joanna snapped. "And I took my children away from your sick, controlling dynamic."
Meredith’s face hardened, the polite mask slipping to reveal naked malice. "You took nothing that belongs to you. Maya and Lily bear our bloodline. They will be raised in Charleston, with proper manners, proper schools, and a mother who understands her place. You have until Friday to accept the settlement Derek offered. Full custody to him, supervised visitation for you once a month, and a modest stipend."
"And if I refuse?"
Meredith stepped within two feet of Joanna, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "If you refuse, we will tear your life apart piece by piece. We will expose every dark secret your family ever had. We will make you look so insane that even your own daughters will grow up fearing you."
Joanna didn't flinch. She stepped forward, closing the distance between them until she was staring directly into Meredith’s eyes.

"You don't scare me anymore, Meredith," Joanna said, her voice dropping to a deadly calm. "You built your entire empire on fear and secrets. But secrets always come out. Now get off my land before I make you leave."
Meredith stared at her in shock, unused to any resistance from the woman she had spent five years breaking down. Without another word, Meredith turned on her heel and retreated to her luxury sedan.
