Chapter 20 - A New Dawn

Six months later.
The spring sun flooded the Virginia countryside, painting the hills in brilliant hues of emerald green and wild magenta. The scent of blooming jasmine and fresh cedar filled the warm afternoon air.
Joanna stood on the front porch of her home, watching three-year-old Maya run across the lush green lawn, chasing a yellow butterfly while Linda sat nearby on the rocking chair, happily feeding baby Lily.
Linda’s head wound had healed into a tiny, barely visible line near her hairline, but her smile was brighter than it had been in years.
The legal battle was finally, completely over.
Derek Montgomery had been sentenced to thirty-five years in federal prison for attempted murder, kidnapping, and financial fraud, with additional charges pending in South Carolina for the reopened murder investigation of Claire Higgins. Meredith Montgomery was serving fifteen years for her role in the financial laundering scheme and corporate conspiracy. Their ill-gotten empire had been dismantled by federal authorities, with substantial restitution awarded to Joanna and the victims of their financial schemes.
Joanna had used part of the legal settlement to establish the Higgins-Miller Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe houses, legal aid, and financial independence resources for women escaping severe domestic abuse.
A car pulled up the driveway, and Sarah Vance stepped out, holding a bottle of sparkling apple cider and a thick manila envelope.
"Good afternoon, ladies!" Sarah called out with a warm smile.
"Sarah!" Joanna walked down the steps to greet her attorney and friend, pulling her into a warm embrace. "What's in the envelope?"
Sarah pulled out a signed legal document bearing the official seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
"Full, sole legal and physical custody, permanently recorded," Sarah declared proudly. "And the court has officially granted the name change. Maya and Lily now bear your family name."
Joanna looked down at the document. Maya Miller. Lily Miller.
A deep, overwhelming sense of peace settled into Joanna’s soul. The shadow of Derek, of Meredith, of the terrifying years spent in a gilded cage—it was all gone. Melted away like winter snow under the relentless warmth of the spring sun.
